Believe it or not, I have a young one with purple sheen, that came from tractor supply. This chicken is wild, in character. Just noticed today, in the sun.. Purple! Otherwise black, with a few brown specks on wings.

@@PaulHoward-k6c I’ve got some that are decent sized but long and lean. Still working on giving them body volume and decent egg size. Probably won’t ever have much meat but some hens are laying decent sized eggs. That’s all part of it. I want them all not just vibrant magenta but with good egg production and at least a little meat on their bones. Plus…also trying to get the big tails on them.

Yeah…seems like whenever I see anything leaning purple most likely it’s a Game chicken. I’ve seen quite a few Game roosters with purple on the wings. Part of that might be because all the standard bred birds have “beetle green sheen” in their standards and blue or purple is frowned on.
@Velasca

Hey Rob I've decided to primarily work on one breed, cream legbar I want to make a cream legbar that's easier to detect what is male or female at hatch. I want to make them bigger and I want to make them more free-range Hardy. I'm not sure if you could even do both maybe a little bigger but much more free range Hardy. Anyway any advice would be appreciated 🫣😛
@RobG7aChattTN
@RobG7aChattTN 10 ай бұрын
I used to have them and they were really easy to sex at hatch. Maybe some of the current lines have lost the trait a bit but not the ones I had. Size might be tougher as it’s so gradual without outcrossing but outcrossing would mean you’d have to reconstruct the breed. I think they are already good free rangers too but I never did free range mine. There’s a guy that recreated the breed back before they were imported and he had a whole formula to do it. He made his pea combed so they could handle cold better. If you could find this posts on Backyardchickens.com maybe you could find bigger, better free rangers to mix and make autosexers and then cross to Cream Legbar to get the cream gene and the blue egg gene. Then you need to test breed to make the blue egg gene homozygous. Maybe it would be more fun to make your own breed and make birds that are autosexing and Olive Eggers. Hold on…found a link to the recipe. Even if you are just outcrossing you’ll probably need the chart that’s here: scratchcradle.wordpress.com/2012/08/26/gms9-autosexing-recipe/

There’s Ayam Cemani way way back in the very beginning. Most of these birds start out with black facial skin including combs and wattles and at maturity they turn solid red. Even the hens are like that. I actually like them being distinct so people don’t think of them as just purple Cemani.

@RobG7aChattTN Жыл бұрын
Well…not really preserving a tradition. This is a new breed that I’m making. If you are referring to the Indonesia tradition of making Bekisars these birds don’t have any Green Jungle Fowl DNA in them but that was the inspiration for creating this breed to be similar in color to the Black Bekisars. The good news is these birds are fully fertile…males and females. So unlike the Bekisars they will breed easily and can be improved over generations.

What color eggs do they lay?
@RobG7aChattTN
@RobG7aChattTN Жыл бұрын
There were a few that laid blue or green eggs but almost all just lay a lightly tinted tan egg. We’ll see if any of the new generation lay blue but egg color is taking a big back-seat here. If at the end some lay blue I might make it a homozygous trait but most likely they’ll lose it.

Not yet. I’m still trying to work towards a uniform breed and seeing if I can push the color further. I feel like a uniform breed might go on forever as an established breed but if I sell birds too soon others might just make purple Sumatras, or purple Ayam Cemanis, or purple (insert breed).
