Similar to RVW's "Lark", but very beautiful and striking in its own right. More of a Poem than a Concerto. I love the harmony in this . The violinist plays it very tenderly.

In the years around 1944, this composer (and pianist) lived in Trondheim, more specifically in the apartment of his mother, widow Magnhild Ofstad (1882-1966) in Vilhelm Storms gate 4, 3rd floor. There was a housing shortage in Trondheim at the time, and Mrs. Ofstad let my grandparents (Ingolf and Alfhild Samdal) and their newborn daughter (my mother) rent a room that she could spare. My mother and her parents moved out of the small room in 1948, because Kolbjørn Ofstad practiced a lot on the piano. The music disturbed my mother's father, who was a professional driver and needed sleep. But my mother thrived in the widow's apartment. She enjoyed helping Mrs. Ofstad's maid, whose name was Emma. Children rarely complain about overcrowding.

Actually Lee Hoiby's orchestration. Harkness was his patron and student. She is responsible for some excessive percussion here and there which he was unable to prevent.

I want to re-listen to this again and again. What a phenomenal concerto. So many breathtaking moments of pure exhilaration. And what a reference to Liszt Transcendental 10 at 17:09!

A wonderful symphony and also a performance, subtle soulful ones, convey Bulgarian melodicism, and why are these composers so rarely performed in Bulgaria: Pancho Vladigerov, Stoyanov Nenov - are they UNIQUE in their own way?

This symphony nr. 2 is in my opinion Crestons finest & best symphony. It is in many ways very original, and yet has an influences from Debussy & the french school of composers, but it still has this very Crestonian language & lyricism. Always loved this composer, one of americas finest through the times.

This is a great composition. I would like to see it re-recorded with modern electronics and a great symphony. This recording does not do justice for the composer. I can hear the great ingredients in the composition, but since it was recorded with vacuum tubes in mono vice stereo in the 1950's it does not have the spectral dynamics of a new recording in present day technology.

I would say some of the music would be great for a movie soundtrack. Since I've published 5 screenplays and have 4 more ready to go, when I start negotiations with the studio, I will mention this because some of my screenplays are Spy thrillers. I can hear intrigue in this symphony.

The presto seems to me to be calling for one of the fiendishly imaginative young Polish animators, maybe one of the stop-motion claymation types, to visualize anything, everything concealed in this maniacal little sound-form. It's all you can do to hear without seeing this music. Brilliant!

Wonderful! Glitters like a freshly split crystal of flawless quartz in the sun. Thank you so much for introducing such a big and brilliant new experience for the mind. I'll be looking for more of this composer and I hope you will provide more.

His best piece is probably the Violin Concerto, which when I first heard it, thought it very similar to Walton’s.
