Years and years of ombachure practice, and some seriously hard-core clarinet method.. several hours practice, in 12 keys probably, and a few more....I'm already out of breath...

Christopher is one of the best jazz clarinetists of our time - wonderful tone, great phrasing and rhythm, fine ideas. But why the hell does he play with guitarists who can't play a single reasonable phrase? This guy has his fingers rubbed in sleeping pills, unable to grasp the rhythm. Somebody forgot to wake him up.

Fantastic as always, Evan. How did you learn to play the Albert system clarinet? I have bought a very nice sounding V. Kohlert and Sons, Albert clarinet. Unfortunately, every teacher that I come across refuses to teach me unless I switch to a Boehm clarinet. I have also tried online, but haven’t had much luck so far. Germans are often shy about their English skills, even if they are good at English. I am running out of ideas. I have gotten far just using a fingering table for Albert / German system clarinets, but I am also aware of some bad habits that I have picked up along the way in learning on my own…

@@highaltitude7573 Just an iPhone recording, me on clarinet with pianist Kris Tokarski in his house. The “dialogue” is Ed Hall in some rehearsal tapes that Denis Lichtman posted interwoven with some ambient noise. That’s from a different rehearsal with Tony Scott and Billie Holiday, but their voices are not audible. The whole thing seemed funny at the time for an April Fools gag. But now with all this AI bullshit, maybe it’s not as amusing?

@@highaltitude7573 …Ed Hall was always a huge influence on me. His sound has been part of my playing for decades. For example, this is from 2003… kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHyah5yDpNFqjck

@Clarinetroad so many questions answered. The quality of the recording was particularly good .. and a swing almost pre modern jazz and unbelievably good version of Giant Steps .. I couldn't initially pair up the dates and styles and I was completely confused... although the Clarinet was so good I thought it to be true..but now it makes sense.. given the other Edmond Hall rehearsals clips on here posted by Dennis Lichtman..it could almost be possible... the other rehearsal clips were brought to my attention by Adrian Cox. We all seem to have a strong connection with Edmond Hall and Sidney Bechet... you both as musicians and for me as an enthusiast of that style of music.

It’s simpler than you may think. Try to hum through the notes. Doesn’t need to be high pitch, just a low hum
When I grow up I wanna play clarinet like this. Beautiful. I'm 13 years old and have been playing for a few years but the way you improvise sounds like your speaking a language. And how you shift in dynamics without messing up- fantastic. The amount of hours you've put into playing the instrument I can't even imagine. Keep playing Even Christopher, I'll certainly be listening.

I've played in big bands / jazz bands for almost 50 years and have always had to double on clarinet (+ bass clarinet and flute). To say that there are no clarinets in jazz band is not at all accurate. To be fair, though, you should learn sax - it's not a big jump (and I think it's easier than clarinet).
@Officialclarinetman Жыл бұрын
@@johnfogg7858I will disagree with you in terms of him learning sax because of Jazz, in Cuba and some related countries The Clarinet is very dominant in their own traditional Jazz, so we need to encourage more clarinet players to start practicing how to improvise
@Officialclarinetman Жыл бұрын
I was told same when I was in the university, but by Gods Grace I have my own band where the clarinet plays a leading role in various genres like Jazz, pop, highlife

@@Officialclarinetman I'm talking about the real world in the USA where there are WAY more musicians than there are opportunities to play for money. If you want to make any money playing jazz woodwinds, you'd better be able to double. You can espouse ideals all that you want but ideals won't feed you.

Why is it that people on the sound board never crank the volume up when the upright bass solos? Really annoys me. Guy is hammering that bass with great skill and almost no one is going to hear him.
