Were you guys wearing down suits? I would think that’s really overkill on Baruntse, especially post-monsoon season. While your expedition group seemed like nice enough lads, it was evident by the number of rocks falling in front of you that your climbing experience likely far exceeded that of your partners. I know Baruntse is an easier 7k, but to have never climbed a thing, as the one fellow noted, and then showing up to this mountain…that’s commendable. Especially if one has never tested high altitude. Heck…before I started climbing my ears used to pop at 3000-4000 FEET, not meters. I still consider Baruntse a very under-appreciated mountain. I especially liked your comment that it provides everything a mountain experience SHOULD provide, away from the chaos and testosterone of Everest. I’ve done Baruntse but have not done Everest, and while there is a portion of me that would like to try it, I just don’t have the tolerance for waiting around that I once had. One of the key pieces I take away from climbing is something that many people do as well, yourself included, and that’s FREEDOM. I just don’t think that spending $65-100k on Everest is a smart spend at this stage of my life, only to be standing around hoping I won’t run out of oxygen if the pace doesn’t pick up. IF I were to go, I think it would need to be on the north side. You were lucky to have done it 15 years ago, but now days, the approach from the South just does not seem freeing. The Himalayan climbing experience is amazing in itself, that I think I’ll be ok if I never climb Everest, and instead spend that money on one to three expeditions. Seeing all your videos certainly motivates me again, and I turn 51 next week! Clock’s running out.

Fabulous film Richard. As much as I typically enjoy only the mountain shots, it was nice to hear you comment on what so many of us go through when at a base camp…which is basically tortured anticipation…playing the whole “hurry up and wait” game. Glad I’m not the only one. Cheers mate.

Great video, I enjoyed your commentary as well. Is that horribly consistent rainfall due to the time of the year that you went, or is it that way all the time? Thanks for the fun video!

How you pronounce "Moroni" is interesting from the perspective of a native Utahan
@richard_pattison
@richard_pattison 17 күн бұрын
Thank you for watching and for correcting my pronunciation. I haven't heard anyone say Moroni, so say it as I read it. Looking on Wikipedia at Angel Moroni, it seems I should be pronouncing Moroni with an "a" not an "o" at the start, and a capital "I" at the end? As in ma-ro-nI?

Il faut ajouter 2400m au cervin pour arriver à la hauteur de l' ama dablam: l'un des plus petits intéressants (alpinisme parlant) dans l'himalaya.

Great video, thanks for making and posting it! I got a great sense of the difficulties and what it might have been like to be there. I love the fact you did not use music, which might be more “entertaining” but interferes with the vicarious experience of the real atmosphere and conditions. I am curious to know why four people had to be rescued from base camp, if that is something you are able to share?

Richard, another superb documentary. Thanks for sharing! Happy that you snuck in that comment about Kosciusko. I never understood the argument for using tectonic plates instead of continents. It's not like that they are going to skip Europe, since that is the same plate as Asia, or add Pico Duarte for the Caribbean plate.

I was researching Carstensz Pyramid a few months ago from my home in California, and out of nowhere my favorite Aussie canyoneer comes out with a 45 min video on the whole shebang! Thanks Richard for sharing your experience.
@richard_pattison
@richard_pattison Ай бұрын
Thank you for the encouragement. Carstensz was a great experience, but lots of logistical challenges. I'd prefer to go and climb with a small group of friends, but just not realistic, I have no idea how you'd possibly negotiate your way past the local villages. So much easier to fly to America or Europe (or Australia), hire a care and then you're independent, in charge of your own destiny. If only America had the Himalaya ;)

Thank you for the support and encouragement. My channel is a mix of my outdoor adventures - my passion is climbing and mountaineering, but I have way more movies of canyons because it's much easier to get footage/perspective of canyons than it is on a wall when you're roped to a partner.
