Uhm, as mentioned in the video those baffles are to avoid sloshing. Sloshing shifts a rockets center of gravity and causes stability and control problems.

Ever carried a large jug of liquid and moved it around quickly? What do you feel when you do that? Correct: you can feel the liquid hitting the side, which results in a force that moves the jug(which you stop by using your muscles to counter it) Now scale that up from a handheld jug to a gigantic tank: the force impacting the tank will be of many many tons. And thoses gigantic tanks do not have a gigantic hand to hold back that force. The forces of liquids sloshing around in an enclosed space is ENOURMOUS. It is sufficient to flip over and crash 18 wheeler tanker trucks, and even of capsizing and sinking entire oil tanker ships which can measure in the lenght of hundreds of meters. For this reason, tanker trucks and oil tankers use compartmentalization, either full(seperate compartments) or partial(such as this example) to stop or slow down the sloshing in order to prevent such things from happening. The only reason oil tankers arent capsizing every time they encounter a storm on the seas is because of such compartmentalizations. Just as how a tanker truck or an oil tankee in motion requires it for stability and safety, a rocket also requires it.

This illustrates why Ullage motors are needed for relight of the engines in flight. They provide just enough G to pin the fuel to the bottom so the fuel pump doesn't cavitate.

Kerosene under pressure. Really is an amazingly simple device, when you work with high volumes of fluids you understand the pressure they come out with at the valve at the bottom.

Another interesting thing about liquid kerosene rocket tanks is that they use the acceleration of the rocket to feed the nozzle. If the flame went out in flight, the rocket would be in free fall meaning the fuel will float weightlessly and coalesce to the hull making reignition impossible without some acceleration

I have disposed of this camera, and looking at the images in the opening seconds, it is not clear which button it is, but my best guess is on the back, lower left. Opps! No! Upper right corner, silver button just below the top!

What percentage of those images would you say started life on film?
@ejud200119 күн бұрын
That would be the ones from my first visit, and a few others, Can't give you an exact figure, but maybe 5-10%%? And then of course, a lot of early digital with lower rez. Not only because digital gave better images, but cost! My earlier shooting was definitely limited by the costs- and that habit carried over into my digital shooting for quite a while, until well into it, I would be shooting 2-300 shots per day. Many from both sources have also had post-processing in modern photo apps.

Wonder what percent of the total volume is consumed by the slosh baffles
@ejud200129 күн бұрын
I cannot say specifically, but long ago, I saw a TV program, where they were doing to same thing for motor vehicle gas tanks, and that question was raised, and it was claimed that the volume taken up by the bafflings was insignificant and made no notable difference in the tanks' capacity. The material is extraordinarily thin and full of holes.

Almost exactly like the kerosene you get at the pump. The camera is inside the fuel tank at the top looking down towards the engines.

The fuel used, RP-1, is genuinely just a very refined kerosene. It's a popular rocket fuel that doesn't need any special handling
@Georgewilliamherbert24 күн бұрын
@@casualbird7671Primarily different to reduce coking behavior where in combustion chamber cooling channels it tends to leave a sooty residue unless it’s extra refined. JP-1 and other jet fuel types of fuel tend to coke in rocket cooling channels, and are themselves improved over heating kerosene by better / colder freezing points. Jet fuel in wings in the stratosphere can’t be allowed to freeze…
@hubbsllc22 күн бұрын
Appears to be looking downward from the top of the tank. The fuel is kept to the bottom by the rocket's acceleration and when the first stage engines stop, that acceleration ends and that's why fuel comes flying up from the bottom of the tank and splashes all over the place - at that point it's weightless.
