There are many different stories as to the name ,I was told in the 70ts that the name came about when English Landlords wanted to rid the lands of its People so as to create large estates as was being done in other parts of Ireland, The stream running through the Glen was Poisoned and lots of People Died and those who did not die Emigrated, That is the only explanation that i have heard,

Roach would have made an excellent parkour free runner. He was always interested in climbing and vaulting derelict buildings when he was a kid.

According to Dowcra's own memoirs - when he arrived in 1600, there was nothing of Derry left. He had to build a refuge for the soldiers. There was no serviceable accommodation at all. It was derelict.

You shouldn't worry about that, I think even in this video you can see that both guys are a littly shy at the beginning - it's always a little strange entering a stranger's home like that or welcoming a stranger in your own place. I put in my profile that I can be a little shy at the beginning :-) I got to know some really interesting people and new perspectives on places through CS that I wouldn't want to miss.

I want to do couch surfing but I am so awkward with people. :( I probably shouldn't put that on my profile. lol . Hopefully I'll get better with practice.

@alexlkk1987 Check the CouchSurfing website. There is plenty of documentation explaining about safety and you will find how coherent it is. You are not really letting in a stranger; there are ways to check the reliability of the people within the community. Go for it!

I would love to go to cities around the world, including many in the US. i just signed up for the website and verified and everything. how long does it usually take for a new user to CS to get picked by a host? i haven't nearly traveled enough and i'm finally ready to explore!!!!!!!

I want to couch surf, but am very nervous about it. So I end up paying for hotels. Now I think about it, it seems like a waste of money to pay for hotels. I would rather spend that money on beer and hanging out with the local folks. Is couchsurfing safe? Has anybody ever had bad experiences?
