To which "guy" are you referring? The teacher (me) or the beginner student who kindly asked for this set of videos? While I identify as a "guy", I am not certain as to the gender identity of the person who requested these "Dust in the Wind" fingerstyle videos. Let me know, and I'll give you the best answer I can!

Respect for the beard
@chriscolby_thejoyofjamming26 күн бұрын
Ha! Thanks! You folks always give me a hearty belly laugh! The comments constantly bring a smile to my face. It's funny that you commented about my beard because it takes me forever to manifest any sort of facial hair. For years the bass player in our band called me "Patches" because I could never match his full-manly beard. I'm going to take a screenshot of your comment and send it to my bass-playing friend. I have a feeling he's going to reply with a photo of him sporting a full-on Billy Gibbons/ZZ Top beard by the New Year. All the best to you, Chris

Thanks! Gained some useful information and that major minor finding was very helpful
@chriscolby_thejoyofjamming26 күн бұрын
Thank you so much for letting me know that this was helpful! I remember a childhood friend/guitar player asking me about this. He specifically asked, "Why is it that when I play the pentatonic scale, it works over some songs (minor in his case) and not other songs?" I answered, "The pinky finger is major, the first finger is minor. Then run your pentatonic wizardry." This guy is really a wonderful guitar player and he taught me lots of Aerosmith riffs when I was young. We jammed right there in the music store and he said, "Oh, wow! Thanks, man!" I should do a video on this - and modes, too. There seems to be some confusion with modal playing among guitar players. All I have is a perspective, but I think it might be helpful. Again, thanks so much for chiming in!!!! After showing this pinky/first-finger realization to many students, they tell me things like, "Pinky is sweet, and the first finger is for the blues thing." I'm so glad you picked up on this! All the best, Chris

Yeah....ha! The Garcia Connection is a positive one for lots of folks. It's true - I look like him..... What would happen if I wore my eyeglasses, too? I had the good fortune and sense to see Mr. Garcia perform with both the Grateful Dead and The Jerry Garcia Band on several occasions. His playing and approach to music continue to inform my creativity. I have to say that your profile picture is a total trip. I really dig it! Be well, Chris

You are totally correct! You don't need a guitar to take the first few lessons at www.joyofjamming.com You can learn about whole, half, and quarter notes by going through the motions with your picking hand. You have a great attitude and approach! We can learn a lot by watching the videos and getting a grasp on the ideas. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Time to learn it start slow and as one gains confidence speed up and get finger memory is key I am learning but patience to stay slow longer don’t speed up and eager to move to next before one is ready I get impatient on some exercise and realize I haven’t mastered the other well enough but my mind understand and fingers need more practice to master but progress is progress I guess thanks

I hope everybody takes note of your comment. You raise very important points. I am going to outline my thoughts and make a video regarding your observations. Three words come to mind: repetition, repetition, repetition. Okay - I know.... It's only one word. There's more to it than just doing something over and over because intention and mindfulness count; but, it's true. I am always so thankful whenever I have the opportunity to pick up a guitar and play. Plucking the strings and moving the air around me always puts me in a good space. I have a lot to say on this subject. So, I will put this on my "Videos to Make" List. Thank you!

@@DnGnUSA I did the "Dust in the Wind" videos you requested. I hope to have bridged the song you requested with an introductory-level set of lessons for beginner finger pickers. It took me a week or two to come up with a solution to your request. I had a lot of fun with these videos. There are fifteen (15) videos in this set and it gets us through the Intro. I will upload them as time permits. Also note: with fingerstyle guitar, the technique you are learning with the picking hand can be applied to so many other songs! These videos aren't for "this song only." We can adapt this technique to many other songs. This is a really deep set of lessons! I think you'll learn a lot! I know I did! Thank you for your request. Please let me know if you have any questions regarding my approach or reasoning. All the best!!!!

If you prefer to keep your fingernails short, there are so many different types of fingerpicks you can try. You may need to try several different brands of fingerpicks before you find the best fit. @@DnGnUSA My apologies for taking so long to reply to your kind comment. I have to break down everything to learn for myself.... Thankfully, one of my guitar teachers (Jay Umble) and two of my philosophy teachers (James Burke and Jay Garfield) taught me how to LEARN. I have been so fortunate to learn directly from so many amazing guitar players/teachers! Each and every one of these teachers would want me to pass along everything I have learned - and I am privileged to do so. My students give back so much that it's hard to express my gratitude in mere words. Hopefully, more videos will express my thanks. People are capable of making such beautiful sounds. Music is a direct reflection of what we all can be. By the way - I have been playing for forty years - and I continue to consider myself a beginner! Take care, be well, and KEEP ON STRUMMING!!!!
