I grew up in Durham Region in the 70s and 80s when my dad was an employee of General Motors. He worked in the north plant. I moved away as a young adult in the early 90s. I returned to Oshawa just recently and now reside just north of the hospital. What happened to this place ? I went for a walk up Simcoe this past summer and it felt like I walked into a different country. I decided to stop at McDonalds at Simcoe and Taunton while on my walk. Something happened there that really made me start paying attention to the demographics. I step up to the counter in McDonalds and ordered a simple cheeseburger. That was it just a cheeseburger. I didn't want anything else. The girl behind the counter seemed confused. It was after my 3rd attempt at asking for a cheeseburger she called over one of her work colleagues. She needed him to translate as she clearly could not understand the English language. Maybe I should have switched to French. Those are the only two official languages in Canada. Unless something has changed and I'm unaware of it. I don't think speaking French would have helped this young lady. This is when I noticed the change. I was the only white person in this restaurant. The conversations I could hear going on around me were neither English or French. Was I magically teleported to a different country while on my travels ? This was not the McDonalds I used to frequent with my friends when we were teenagers. How did I go from the blue collar city, full of hard working GM employees that was a little "rough around the edges", to what I will describe as Mumbai without the heat ? Can someone explain to me how I can stand at an intersection, look at the pedestrians, see the people in their cars and on the busses, and not see one white person ? No black people, no Chinese, Japanese. Just Indians. And not the North American native Indians, just Eastern Indians. When did Durham Region get overtaken by another country ? What happened that I can't even go into a McDonalds and order a cheeseburger without the assistance of a translator ? McDonald's may not be the healthiest choice, but this experience has left a really bad taste in my mouth.

part of the reason that you have particularly noticed this in the northern part of Oshawa is because this is where Durham College is located and that school in particular has accepted a very large number of international students. Much of the swell in immigration numbers in recent years is due tot the international student program which is basically very exploitative to those students who have come here from abroad and was designed to line the pockets of the administration of the colleges and the universities and of course the politicians

You’re being diplomatic. The trade is crucial to both nations, and the reason the Americans are contributing little is because short-sighted fools in Michigan control the state government. The US is paying for the landing as that is Federally controlled and trumps state authority. Thank you for doing this. Also, Canada pays so only Canada will collect tolls - again by international treaty which trumps state authority.

I wouldn't say the bridge is more important to Canada than the US. When Trump's tariffs hit, American consumers will foot the bill. Canada has an excess of resources and will use these domestically and find other trade partners.
@CanaRoads
@CanaRoads Ай бұрын
I agree that the trade relationship is important for both countries, but a greater portion of Canada's trade is with the United States compared to the other way around. Yes Canada should grow its relationships with other countries but America will always be our biggest trading partner. We haven't been to keen on developing our resource sector recently though have we? Trump has all the bargaining power. Hopefully a fair agreement can be worked out
@cyberpleb2472
@cyberpleb2472 Ай бұрын
@@CanaRoads The US imports slightly more from Canada than Canada exports to the US. Regardless, the tariffs will hurt American consumers far more than Canadians. American auto makers will be especially hard hit as more than half their vehicles/parts cross the Mexican and Canadian borders five times or more during production. Trump lacks the brain power required to figure out how tariffs work, but others may be able to talk him out of it.

Two of the reasons Canada is footing the bill is 1) the U.S. government was taking way too long to decide if and how much money they would invest and 2) Michigan did not have the infrastructure money to build out the U.S.side, so Canada made the agreement mentioned in this video to speed. up construction as truck traffic in both directions was suffering and to remove traffic from the centre of Windsor.
@CanaRoads

Thank you for providing more insight into that point. Furthers my point in highlighting that the trade relationship between the 2 countries is more paramount to Canada which is why they wanted to expedite the process. Thanks for the comment!

The Ambassador Bridge is so outdated it was used to carry hundreds of Ford Model Ts crossing over the Detroit River between Detroit and Windsor back in the day. The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel came later as another border crossing. Unfortunately, both border crossings are congested and let's hope the new bridge is open in time for smooth travel for border crossers.

This city could be so much more. It's okay but it's very conservative in its appearance and its outdated in so many ways. The reason is the city's management. City council members are not people who have any business skills at the level one would need to manage a corporation. The thinking is small town thinking that prevents this city from growing in many wonderful ways. Parking meters all over this city are nothing but a cheap money grab and turn visitors off in a big way. They will not shop in the downtown areas where they will be ticketed in just a few minutes after their time is up by hovering meter maids. How nice for visitors! Victoriaville is an embarrassing piece of very poor decision making by council and should have been torn down many many years ago. It confuses visitors immediately upon entering . They quickly realize there is nothing there and return to their cars after feeding the meter with piles of pocket change. I am shocked at how long it is taking the city to remove this horrible mistake.There are so many areas of this city that need revival and year after year dead spots continue to sit abandoned by the city and an apathetic city (residents) continues to accept the status quo. If I was a tourist visiting Thunder Bay, I would be so disappointed.
