Pioneer Ohio!, I used to live in Montpelier long time ago. When I travel thru NW Ohio, Napoleon, Defiance for Telco I see many 4228 or 4221 antennas combined with a VHF yagi. Some are on American towers and some on tilting towers. Not sure who made those tilting towers that piggyback each other. I always thought the same company installed many of those since they were so similar. OTA TV is making a comeback. OTA plus streaming is the way to go. Minimal expense compared to CATV or Sat TV rates. You look very comfortable on that tower. I used to climb telco poles but my knees can't take it anymore.

Any specific detail about the technique used with the belt thing hooked to the mast so you can work with your both hands? Looks stupid but a 2 minute crash Course on that specific thing would set me ready to climb mine with ease. What belt did you use? Where can I purchase one line that?
@billmoran3812
@billmoran3812 3 жыл бұрын
Those old style waist belts are dangerous. They will not protect you from a fall, but rather will slide up and prevent you from breathing if you are hanging from the belt. A full body harness and dual fall arrest lanyards are required to climb safely. When climbing you should always be secured to the tower by at least one lanyard. A positioning lanyard attached to the chest D-ring on your harness is used to position your body on the tower and allow use of both hands.

@@billmoran3812 I used to be a rock climber and also did some of the Italian Via Ferrata. I still have a chest harness and a "Sitzgurt" (sit harness?). I used both, with two tails. The only problem - most of my carabiners were too small to connect directly to the tubing. I had one that was big enough. With the other I had to wrap the rope around the tube and connect the carabiner back on the rope. But at 75 I was a little shakier than in the old days ;-)

If this is what the customer wants. He got a great setup. For the rest of us a heavy duty tripod and mast would knock about $600 off the quote. But I know some people are not willing to risk roof leaks with a tripod. I would want a tower if I was in a lightning prone area like Florida.

This tower is steel. It is manufactured by American Tower Company in Shelby Ohio. The model of this particular one is called Special 6, for the amount of cross rungs per section. Each section weighs around 55 pounds. The reason it looks easy in the video is practice and technique. I have been installing these towers since 1994, so at the time of this video it had been 21 years.

@@Singercommunications I still have a tower like this. Was installed in 1978 and kept it painted and guyed off. Use to be every other house had a tower. Then with cable everyone got rid of them. I see the newer style towers with the thin bracing. My tower is 60’ and has had a 1/4” of ice in blowing winds, if it was not for guyed wires it had came down. Had a tower with a Moon raker 4 and had not got guyed wires up and a wind storm came up and it laid the tower on its side. Did not hurt tower or antenna, dug around the base and used our wrecker with concrete truck on site and really made a huge base of cement and always kept them guyed. I use the remaining tower for cell phone repeaters and have a schedule 80 pipe on top with a 5’ lighted windsock. Use 1/4” guyed wires.

You really don't need much of a base, for an install like this one. I have almost the same exact setup, I drove in (3) - 6 foot x 1" diameter pipes slid the tower over the pipes, put a round disk blade down over the pipes, (so it wouldn't sink into the ground) and fastened it to the framing members of the house, with angle iron. It's was up 28 years, with a 5 element beam and I was up several times to make repairs , over the years. Once its fastened to the house, the pipes just keep the base sliding sideways, all the weight is downward.

I hope you checked your engineering specs. My 60’ self supporting Amerite 1810 tower requires a mounting cage encased in a 6x6x4 reinforced footing on undisturbed soil or compacted fill. This looks like a rohn 25 (aluminum not galvanized steel) or similar and I would not consider it properly or safely installed. It looks buried in the dirt.

Would it not have been better to have a 10ft mast on the roof instead of wasting a bunch of tower?
@speedbird227

Really if you know what you're doing and don't plan on removing it a normal J mount could do the same thing. You can even put it into the side of the roof which would further reduce the risk of leaks. I would understand the tower if they planned to go farther past the roof or have more than just a tiny TV antenna.

The one big defect that comes with those Towers is the nuts and bolts that come with them. They're nice and shiny when new but start rusting quickly. Use anti-galling compound!! Stainless will likely lock up and not be able to tighten or loosen. Best to use galvanized hardware, in my opinion.
