Any food distractions?? We see a lot of it in the NE.

Great commentary, as always, about the dog and handler's process. I'm stealing "crottering." Was at a trail a couple weeks ago where I witnessed many dogs multitasking. Question: What told you the first room was cleared? After seeing how hard that one hide was (and your observation odor was all over the room), I would worry there is another hide in the room that was making that room difficult. Gems: wait for the deep push for inaccessible. When you get a squishy alert, leave and come back.

Thanks for the new video. What a great run. Iona is so fun to watch. Some great lessons too. I went to a trial over the weekend to just observe. I noticed many handlers that didn't give their dog space or time to work. Many handlers were marching through the search area and their dogs stopped hunting and started healing. So your advice to let the dog lead and give them time really resonates with me today. Next gem: rember the odor plumes in addtion to where the hides are.
@SniffingWithMurphy7 ай бұрын
There were two moments of gold for me: 1. The dog showed inaccessible behavior. I hadn't considered that could be a behavior (still new to this). 2. There's odor all over this thing, but I can't find the source." I'm going to start looking for these from my dog.

Great search! Your dog has so much drive for unfound odor and great confidence. A judge once told me, "Your dog is trying to get out of the search area." because we found all the hides (excellent interior run). Is it possible your dog wasn't in odor and just wanted to leave the search area to find more odor?
@noahgaines2489 ай бұрын
Yes, I think that is exactly what was happening. If she runs out of hides to find, she just makes a larger search area!
@SniffingWithMurphy9 ай бұрын
Speedy dog. Incredible ignoring found odor obedience.
@noahgaines2489 ай бұрын
No, it is not. I messed up my training by dropping tins in the water tubs and as a result my dog started alerting on them by sight and not smell. So I had to start over from scratch. If you watch the next few videos in this series, you can see how I progress this to water hides. My girl has her buried Masters title so it worked well for us :)

This is not Water Hide searching. 😳

Always when in doubt move from the other direction. Good call for Anne. I think the dog should practice threshold hides, and you can set up practice with fans to help with with pooling odor. Once they experience it, they can work through it in competition with more sucess.
@denisecooper571910 ай бұрын
Could have been helpful to hesitate at the door for a few seconds and the dog may have gotten the second hide first, almost like a threshold hide. That dog might work better off lead in an interior search area. Sometimes the leash seemed tight.
@noahgaines24810 ай бұрын
Good points, she might have done better off leash. However that is not always an option.

We are new to the scent detection game. How do you teach your dogs not to go back to the hides they have already found?
@noahgaines248 Жыл бұрын
@@dahlasdog1 once they understand the game, you stop paying them when they refind a hide.
@kristenh.565 Жыл бұрын
@@dahlasdog1 it's a process in my opinion - we went back to some repeat hides a few times even at the higher levels. sometimes the dog goes back to verify for themselves, i would pay them once more. or sometimes if they cannot another hide and are frustrated. but eventually the prey drive will kick in and the desire to find others will outweight what they've already found

Super excited to start. I grew up training drug dogs and did them for the government and PD all over the US. The highest level AKC is the level we basically start at. I have a dog I've had 6 sessions and she"s already responding to things inside of vehicles. My personal dog can find the aides used in AKC inside of vehicles as well. I'm actually releasing a detector dog series that teaches actual search patterns, how to read the wind and put your dog in the best position to find the aides. Hoping to start a team. Thanks for letting me see the placements....super shallow....super easy to teach. Best of luck to you.
