I remember the buildup to the release of the Super NES in early 1991 very well. Every magazine story, every television ad…even the layouts in catalogs from Sears, JCPenney and BEST. Even better, the system did not disappoint when it was released. My mom picked one up in September of ‘91 along with PilotWings, and by Christmas of that year my brother and I had added Final Fight, Super R-Type, ActRaiser, F-Zero, Ultraman, and Super Ghouls n’ Ghosts. Looking back, we were clearly spoiled rotten, but the next year in October of ‘92, after being wowed by Sonic the Hedgehog, and looking forward to the release of the Sega CD, I decided I wanted a Sega Genesis, so I STOLE $50 from the purse of a childhood friend of my mother’s who was visiting us that month and used it along with allowance money to buy one. Then, for Christmas of 1992, my mother bought my brother and I a Sega CD-for $300-all during a period in which she was fighting cancer.
