If you count all the different patterns, maple is one of my favorite species to work with. So many different kinds of cool figure, and the light grain really lets it show. I'm partial to quilted for flatwork, but it not so much for tools and turnings.

Stone scales is intriguing... How does it affect the weight and balance? Do you have to make the blade thicker to balance the knife? Also, how brittle will they be? I mean do stone scales withstand shock? Can the stone be reinforced some way, like stabilized wood?

@goncalovazpinto6261Ай бұрын
My theory is that weird things happen to everybody, they're "weird" because of the way our brains work, we have blind spots, we invent or change memories, we have expectations of how nature works that are actually wrong, etc. The difference is that some people are more attentive and notice stuff, while others live inside their own heads and notice almost nothing.

@@SteveMcHuman oh wow, that sucks!! Thankfully, I’ve only ever had one order go missing out of the country and it went into South Africa, which is world renowned for stealing packages with cool things in them. In the end, I made the customer a replacement and got the second one to him. Shipping usually isn’t too bad! I’m using Etsy for international orders and it’s usually like 50-60usd. If my business bought that same shipping label it would be 250, so Etsy saves international customers a ton.

Great video! Couple of questions: is that an Eclipse (clone) honing guide? Any mods/tweaks to it? I've been struggling to consistently turn a burr freehand on my 'nicer' steel tools ie A2, PM-V11, MagnaCut. It's either so small I can't see/feel it, or just not there. Maybe an issue with my freehand technique - but I don't seem to have any issue with less 'exotic' steels (old Stanley, etc.) With a honing guide (Veritas MkII) I can pull a burr pretty easily even on the fancy stuff. I've seen/heard a lot of people say A2 doesn't get a burr like O1... but you obviously don't have any issue. Thoughts? And lastly, do you have a video anywhere showing your freehand honing technique? Thanks!

Is it a drawknife or a spokeshave?
@AriesTheCam8 ай бұрын
They're drawknives. The handles are usually a giveaway. Similar tools, but spokeshaves usually have straight handles right off the sides.. drawknives usually have curved handles. Sometimes companies blur the line though. If you haven't ever used one check out a combo spokeshave. The curved blade on them is awesome for making tool handles for stuff like hammers, tomahawks, axes etc.

So, what do you run your MagnaCut at?
@johngeddes78949 ай бұрын
The cutting edges of A-2 and D-2 crumble, even with a 30 degree bevel, so why does it keep getting hyped ? Check out DC53, if you want to make a great chisel. It not only takes a fine edge, at 61-62 RC, it remains very tough, and impact resistance like you wouldn’t believe. It was designed to supercede the above mentioned air hardening steels to eliminate that crumbly cutting edge that keeps woodworkers sharpening, not woodworking. The patant was awarded in 1986, so it’s nothing real new. Check it out.
