Looks like the salad under led light got burnt. Looks like its been to close to light. That will stunt the growth big time.

@marambula

Sadly no comparisons can be made because you grew the two groups of lettuce in entirely different styles of hydroponics. One was kratky and the other was.... waterboarding I guess? You suffocated the roots on the windowsill plants ==> Oxygenation of the roots is one of the most important concept in hydroponics so sadly the entire experiment has to be thrown out as spoiled. Lettuce looks tasty!

Indoor light costs electricity. Mine is $10 extra electricity bill per month. But lettuce cost $3 at the supermarket. So I think natural sunlight wins here because it is free.

Hhm, I wonder how the dry mass compares. Is it that the far red light produces more plant mass or just engorging with water? Either way, I like your videos alot as a hobby indoor gardener myself!

If the windows are low e tinted like most newer ones, the plants won't likely get a full spectrum of light.

The experiment wasn’t fair imo. In the kratky method, you have the light directly overhead. In the DWC-like system (proper DWC would have a pump aerating the solution) the seedlings would have been below the pot line to start, then because it relies on the window for indirect filtered light, it’s not really a sun vs kratky comparison. It’s just a led light vs window sill. You should have place the DWC system outside. I have compared this myself, outside, the plants grow with much deeper Colors and faster.

There is no way 16 hours of full light can't beat natural sunlight for plants. Yes, 16 hours is clearly the winner. More exposure to light more time to grow. Plants need to take a rest. 8 hours without light is enough. :)

Can we do 24/0 light cycle for lettuce ? What’s the growth difference between 18/6 and 24/0 cycles ?
@Genxlettuce
@Genxlettuce 3 жыл бұрын
DLI of about 24 seems to be the average edu pdf results of maximum development before just creating wasted energy for less results after 24 DLI. I’ve done both at that target with 14 hour days and high ppf and low ppf at 24 hrs and saw no difference in continuous or dual cycle. I do prefer lower light intensity to longer on times verse higher ppf for overall health of the leaves. Higher ppf does produce some fantastic leaves in density and broadness, but can signal a tip burn too. ( even if proper ca++ is maintained) shooting for 225-245 ppf is like a wonderful sweet spot.

HI .. Did you make or build the tray rack . Also The lights you are using , are they full spectrum led grow lights ? Thanks
@GrowAnywhere
@GrowAnywhere 3 жыл бұрын
I built the rack. It was a wire shelving unit I bought from Costco. I used cool-white LED shop lights (5000 lumens, 5000 K, 50 W for each fixture). They are full-spectrum lights, but not marketed as grow lights. I'll make a video later about how we can use not just "grow lights" to grow indoors.

Great experiment! Please confirm it was LED shop lights, not LED grow lights. LED shop lights are much cheaper than LED grow lights and I am skeptical about shop lights for growing. If LED shop lights work well for growing leafy vegetables, will any type of LED light work well too? Thank you.

LED shop lights indeed. Not "grow" lights. Plants use the photons emitted by LED shop lights for efficient photosynthesis, too. I'll make a video about this topic soon.

I think your sunlight version has got some other issues except for the light. Firstly those poor lettuces are kinda far down in their pot but more importantly the kratky system relies upon the water level going down so that the roots can get some oxygen. In your case it looks like the lettuce plants are sitting on the water’s surface and are never able to absorb some form of oxygen. That setup would only work with a DWC ;) Best regards and thanks for your video!

Good observation. Supports should have been placed in the container. So, as the nutrient solution falls and the grow platform come to rest on the supports, the roots continue to grow and the space between the surface of the nutrient solution and bottom of the grow platform will develop air roots.

100% Would love to see this done again but with the window system top tray being supported by sitting on some skewers or something so it doesn't drop with the water level. Unfair comparison using two different style containers.
