I don't like to hear a lot of snare ringing overtones .. It can get in the way of other pitched instruments !

I typically use a Shure Beta58a on the snare.

Funny how, after all of this, the SM57 is still potentially the best. The DPA 4099 seemed good in this case, but for about 6x more money? :/ Also, funny that the Earthworks SR20LS worked so very well even though it's for kick drums.

If you're going to compare mics AT LEAST DO A MINUTE OF PLAYING EACH BECAUSE NO ONE, UNLESS YOU HAVE ROBOTIC EARS CAN COMPARE THESE MICS THAT QUICK! Do you have a link to a full length video if so post it in your response!

They all sound good. If I wanted to be different from the common but great Shure 57, I’d probably pick a good Sennheiser mic for the cool brand name vibe

A combination of the dynamic mic (Shure 57 or the Beyerdynamic M201) to get that thump, blended with one of the brighter condenser mics (Earthworks or DPA) would sound great. In addition to a bottom snare mic ofc.

Can you do this and repeat the hits multiple times before switching mics? It’s difficult to grasp the individual sound characteristics of each mic when the sound shifts too quick. The ears have to get used to each sound for at least a few seconds each. 10 seconds would be good.

The first thing I thought when watching the Zildjian video of this performance was definitly how amazing the mix sounded. You really did a great job on this one! I've seen a few performances from The UK drum show, and everytime the mix was fantastic. Did you do the mix for all the videos that are from The UK drum show?

It's not a trick, it's Simon. The "trick" would not be near as effective without his playing style, accuracy, tuning etc. I always say really there are no tricks, but techniques. I, like others have heard "can you make me/it sound like..." and I cut them off before the sentence finishes. Play well, sing well, write well, it WILL fall together nicely. THAT's what makes it "easy" for the mixing engineer. Period.

Sennheiser 904 and Audio Technica ATM450 were my personal favorites. Really interesting comparison. I'd love to see this for snare bottom or snare shell side. Great video!

Simon is my biggest influence only second to Neil Peart. Obviously due to their skill, but moreso because of their philosophy and way of inspiring a kid that they can do it.

This is fabulous. Simon is an incredible performer, and I love the trick of using SPL instead of a compressor NYC-style. Simon has also done a lot of work with the great Alan Parsons, another legend. Thanks for posting this!

hi bro great video, do you send the sna edetail to the parallel comp aswell? the reason i am asking is i tend to get more cymbal bleed from the main snare that i send to the parallel . any help.

Yeah cool thing! A bit like doing NYC comp on the snare - but not with a comp but a transient designer. Cool idea! I just got a project going, where I will check this with top or bottom snare mic, seems to get really funny. Thanks for sharing this idea! Liked and will check your other vids. Best regards, Stefan

There is also an aggressive compression on the snare sustain, which makes it come up nicely even more.

Very nice! Quick question, how do you make you cymbals sound nice and crispy/airy without making it harsh? I really struggle to get the cymbals I mix to sound like these. Even when I get to record with very nice overhead mics suchs as 251’s or c12’s.
