To the CEO of Danaher, Rainer Blair and President of Cepheid, Vitor Rocha: We call on you to drop the price of your GeneXpert medical tests supplied to low- and middle-income countries to US$5 each for all diseases so that millions more people around the world can be properly diagnosed and receive the treatment they need to stay alive and healthy.

Innovation needs people. People who dare to try new things, to be different, so many millions of people never get the chance, because Danaher charges such high prices for life saving tests to low and middle income countries, that treatable diseases like HIV spread and kill, and curable diseases like TB go undiagnosed, and kill millions. That’s the choice. People, or profits. Innovate? Try innovating without people. Which of those millions might have found new cures, new innovations, had they lived?

The speed of science is held back by profiteering. People die, bright, human minds suffer, because Danaher charges low and middle income countries so much for life saving tests, that the science never reaches those lives. Never saves them. This is how science is held back, this is how the bright minds of the world are snuffed out, never able to contribute to the world. Because Danaher wanted more money.

Billions of dollars are made by this company. This company that prices what they themselves term as “life saving tests” so high that low and middle income countries cannot afford enough tests to save lives.

It is really hard to respect the company, or the science when Danaher insist on profiteering off low and middle income countries, threatening the lives of those millions of people for a few bucks. Why make the test at all, if you plan to make it so expensive that the people who need it will never get to use it? This isn’t a printer cartridge. This is a life changing series of tests. Why would a company that makes billions of dollars act this way? What kind of world do we want to live in? One where science saves lives? Or one where science saves rich peoples lives?
