I have very fond memories of Chief Walks with the Wind. I first met him in the early 1970's when he came to Valley View Elementary in Romeoville, Illinois. My classmates and I filed into the gymnasium for the assembly and were instantly charmed by the warmth of this man who seemed so exotic to us. A more outgoing classmate outstretched his right arm and presented his open palm to Chief Walks with the Wind that day and confidently said, "How." Chief Walks with the Wind smiled and responded with a short two syllable greeting of another language and we knew we were friends of his. I can say for certain that I was amazed by the archery skills that we witnessed that day! I can also say for certain that many of us took the invitation to visit again at Starved Rock seriously and looked forward to those visits with much anticipation. At those visits, our educations continued and our friendships grew. I treasured the expertly handcrafted black and white beaded ring, the autographed handmade wooden propeller toy, the archery lessons (even after arthritis made the lessons painful for the teacher) and especially the down to earth fellowship with Chief Walks with the Wind on each of the Starved Rock visits.

A few “know before you go” comments about taking the Bluff Trail to St. Louis Canyon 1) 1.5 miles from the visitor center, so 3 miles round trip; 2) trail has a number of long stairways and frequent grade changes; 3) although there is a boardwalk for part of it, most of the trail is dirt with many exposed tree roots, obstacles to reduce erosion, and other stepping challenges; 4) no toilet facilities; 5) narrow trail with 2-way traffic means a lot of waiting for others to pass, especially on the spur near the canyon. There are great views along the Bluff Trail and the St. Louis Canyon is immense and beautiful. For those who don’t want to walk the whole distance, there is a closer parking lot West of the park along Rt 178 South of the park entrance.

Which trail can we take our dog?

Dogs are allowed on all trails as long as they are on a short leash. Please clean up after your dog. It gets very crowded here on weekends. So please arrive early.

Brandon wanted to make Christmas Eve Eve a night to remember with a perfect proposal to his girlfriend. Casey thought she was going our for dinner. Brandon chose Starved Rock Lodge (near Utica, IL) because it was a special place for both of them, but especially because Casey had worked at the Lodge in the past. The staff cooperated and this video was created by Marketing Director Kathy Casstevens. By the way, she said YES!

Take Route 71 WEST from Starved Rock Lodge (toward Oglesby). Turn left into the DEER PARK COUNTRY CLUB. Follow the lane until it dead ends and you are there. This is a public entrance, but a lot of people don't know about it. Check facebook before you come because that park trail is closed due to flooding right now.
