One of the perennial problems in casting for musicals is whether to cast an actor who can sing OK or a phenomenal singer with limited acting skills. Time and again a great performance has compensated for vocal limitations. Plus he's _Vincent Price_ for goodness' sake. What more can you ask for?

CANNOT get enough of this! Gilbert was a genius with words, that's for sure, and Sullivan's music is a perfect fit.

OH EM GEE! What a WONDERFUL scene! I saw an amachoor production of "Ruddigore" many years ago, and the only thing that imprinted itself on my brain was "Basingstoke! BASINGSTOKE!" These two are absolute perfection!

Watching this again! OH EM GEE, WHAT a dynamic trio! This MUST be the funniest trio in all of G&S - it certainly is the most breathless! Once again, Gilbert's incredible mastery of words, rhyme and rhythm are demonstrated! AND THE SINGERS! This was the first time I knew Price was a singer - and a singer who can master Gilbert's incomparable babble is a prize indeed! Bravo times ten!

Sir Graves Ghastly played this song on his Detroit show every Halloween night with a cool spooky video behind it and him flying through the sky. I LOVED IT!!!!! Can anyone tell me which series this was from and when it aired X!? I need to know the years that it aired on TV. I’m 65 so I would’ve seen it if it was in the 60s 70s 80s 90s. Anyone who helps me find out this information I will be greatly appreciative and I really hope someone can and thank you !! ❤❤❤❤

It's a song from a production of the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta Ruddigore. It aired on PBS in 1982. This song is When the Night Wind Howls. I first heard it on Sir Graves' show and always loved it, took a while to find it. This obviously isn't the version Sir Graves played on his show, but Spotify has a recording of Ruddigore, and When the Night Wind...on that sounds like it might be the one Sir Graves played

This is the butchered version that has been usual since the 1920s revival. See the 1987 New Sadlers Wells version for the original, which repeats the introduction before each verse and the repetition with Richard following.

This series of Gilbert & Sullivan operas speckled their casts with famous people. Casting Vincent Price as the villian was hilarious in its own right, made funnier still because he was the YOUNGER brother and Keith Michell was the elder. Mr. Price made it through the patter song later on with glowing colors.

I had always assumed that "wind" in "nightwind" would be pronounced with a short "i". Here, it is pronounced with a long " i". Wind, when pronounced with a long "i", makes me think of a verb "twist" ... and not the noun "breeze". What do readers consider correct or preferred... the short "i" or the long "i"?

I’ve seen people say he couldn’t sing based off this performance….listen to him in The Great Mouse Detective as Ratigan. The man could sing. But at his age when he did Ruddigore he had dentures which changes how you speak and sing. I think he did a fantastic job in this performance and you could see how much he enjoyed if. I call that a fantastic performance!

I've never heard this, but had to look it up as it was mentioned in a pivotal point in Harper Lee's "Go Set a Watchman" sequel/prequel to "To Kill a Mockingbird."
