Yes, this area has many temples, clans, for a great temple tour. I walked Taiwan for 3 months, most attractive is their temple cultures, plus frequent festivities for tourist to take pictures. Besides Taiwan, other Chinese areas are either not culture-rich or neglected by governments. Singapore is quite poor cultural-wise, HK, too. KL has few. Penang has all reasons to compete.

These British colonial buildings are actually quite small in sizes. The Baroque artistic not really elaborate. Not sure the reasons, maybe at that time building materials were hard to come by. Five foot way gokaki tried to copy the columns. The concept was very innovative, but also small in size.

@@ronaldstraveldiary Comparing to Taiwan/southern China, most colonial buildings like the same. Smaller size in straits settlements probably due to concrete materials. Southern China was very early in cement production. Penang road police headquarters ‘四方樓‘ was built just before WW2, not by Japanese, by the British.

Compared to Taiwan’s 101, Petronas tower is much more functional. 101 has really nothing interesting around it. At most ~10 storeys Petronas has super foodcourt for common folks. Beautiful fountain lake like that of Vegas Bellagio. Walkable from BB. Free shuttle buses. 101 falungong cult harassing tourists.

World Optics, my first eyeglasses. I am now in Taiwan, walking around watching the ‘five Foot way’ goh kaki. There was a study trying to link Straits Settlements five-foot-way to Taiwan. They are similar in many ways. The conclusion is Taiwan shophouses are much newer than Penang’s. Penang shophouses easily stand at 150 years. While Taiwan’s about 50.

I am now walking Taiwan places. Besides food, I try to search for historic clues as told by buildings. Penang’s shophouses just froze at pre-war, while Taiwan has transformed a couple of times now. Mostly the availability of concrete cement. Singapore transform from these brick/tile shop houses into flats. Concrete floors made it possible to go higher. Whereas Penang shophouse are mostly wood. Like with most all Malaysian cities and towns.

I am now walking Kaohsiung, 2nd tier city like Penang. Population and economy, they are about same. Both came out off colonial rule after the war. Both have the same shophouses before the war. But, Kaohsiung took on to renewal process. Many buildings are newer, roads and infrastructure. Whereas Penang has been stagnant in past 60 years. No subway no good infrastructure. Buses are ok, but also going backwards. Not that progress is always good, but Penang people choose to be behind time, too much immersed in history cocoons.

I don’t quite understand the historical reason of naming it ‘Queens’. Why didn’t the Malays change the name after independence? Unless the Malays are also very colonial. Naming aside, the area is very new, almost like 50 years ago, except with high rises condos and sort. I think the night market is pretty big. Did not have the yearn to go out nighttime.
