I enjoy watching your videos. At NRL22X matches and Nationals, you are not allowed to ask for time anymore, so if you plan to shoot any X matches you might want to get a gun timer. The cheap little talking timer has improved my stage management a lot.

@@22LRPhantom No prob. I would hate for a shooter of your ability to get thrown by something so basic at a large match. There's some discussion about it among the NRL MDs, I wouldn't be surprised if asking for time is disallowed at monthly matches next year for everyone but new shooters and juniors. On the other hand, PRS is really cracking down on coaching but they still allow you to ask for time (depending on the match). I hate asking for time now because there is a delay for the person to check the timer, then tell you the time. Feels like an eternity when you are on the clock. A lot of matches are using shot timers, it's difficult to tell someone the time unless they are running a separate timer as well as the shot timer.

Thank you! The time was really tight on most stages for sure this month. A lot of 12 round stages with a number of hard shots to make, and for some reason the first stage had some wind that didn’t seem to make a lot of sense and that took a few moments to figure out as well. At least the 10 round stages went quick but there were only two of those this month. Good luck this month, I can’t wait to see your video of the match!

@@22LRPhantom my video is in the “edit bay” now. This was definitely a match where I had some challenges half way through. We definitely had some swirling winds and the last 2 NRL stages. I dropped 10 total on those two. 😬 still placed among the top shooters. We have such a highly competitive open division where the top ten shooters are almost always an impact or timed stage hundredths of points separated in the results.

Definitely a thoughtful design. I imagine this being helpful on something like a tank trap where the traditional designs may not provide that support. This looks like it would be a fantastic help in that regard.

Yeah, the design is brilliant. This entire time it seems like people have focused on making the bag stick to the prop well but never on holding the rifle to the bag. I think bags people use a lot get worn in such a way they kind of do this, but just building it into the design was a great idea. @22LRPhantom 3 ай бұрын
Thank you! That is a great question. One of the guys that shoots at our local match makes custom imported car parts and after looking at the shooting bags we were using was convinced he could make a better one. After a little bit of back and forth he created a new bag, called Sand Castle, which uses a unique design that really hold the rifle stable while shooting. I’m working on a video to let people know it exists because it was developed locally. It is available online here buschursllc.com/br-cart/home/2019-the-sandcastle-bag.html. Since I helped provide feedback to make the bag better, I’ve been told if you write my name (Ben) in the order form you will get an extra 10% off (it won’t come off the online order, but I’ve been told when they process the order later the discount will be applied then). I am not sponsored and don’t make any money off of this bag, just FYI. The Sand Castle has quickly become my go to bag for most stages and I’ve used it for the past three competitions and have been impressed. I’m hoping to be able to go into more detail in a video about it sometime next month. I just realized you also might be referring to the large support bag I used on a few stages as well. That is the Cole Tac Mega Bag, which is available here www.cole-tac.com/product/mega-bag/. I keep finding new ways to use this bag and I really like it.

I’m sure you’ve considered this, but I was wondering about using a large cube bag as a chair? I think the idea makes for a great way to build that position, especially for someone like me, trying to make an almost 70 year old body work. But, the NRL rules specifically mention no additional props like chairs, buckets, or range equipment may be used. I realize this isn’t actually a chair, but I would think it may border on violating the spirit of the rules. Have you heard from anyone else about this. Did you someway clear it with the national rules committee ?
@22LRPhantom
@22LRPhantom 4 ай бұрын
That’s a really interesting thought. When reading the rules I always read it as you can’t take the typical range equipment, like an actual chair, into the stage as they are typically available but would make many stages too easy. This seems to fit in the context of how the rule is written as well, mentioning typical equipment that is found at a range, so I think the rule is just trying to limit people using range equipment to gain an advantage. You are allowed to take shooting bags, and you obviously use them to lean on in various ways to become more stable, and I’ve never seen any restrictions on how you can use a shooting bag in the rules. I haven’t ever contacted the national organization for clarity but I asked the local Match Director and he thought it was a good idea. Since we all share equipment with everyone at the match it really doesn’t give anyone an advantage over another shooter during the match. If you limited the ways people could use shooting bags I think it would honestly open up a whole can of worms. Did one competitor lean illegally on a shooting bag from a given position on a prop? I’ve been to a number of matches in and around Ohio and I’ve seen many people use this as a tactic to get through a particular stage and it’s never been ruled illegal, in NRL22, PRS, or even local clubs. So to answer the question directly, no I have not contacted the national rules committee, but I don’t believe it violates even the spirit of the rule since you use shooting bags any way you can to become more stable and what I’m using is not range equipment that is lying around. I would talk to the local match director and see what they think is fair and go with that. My bet is that as long as you are willing to share equipment it really won’t matter in the end results of a particular match since everyone could use it but everyone might have more fun and get more hits along the way. Good luck and thanks for the comment!

@@22LRPhantom We are just getting started with precision shooting at our club, and at this point I am kind of the match director :) Just to be clear. As an old man I would benefit greatly from being able to use a bag, or anything else, as a chair. I love the idea! If a person brought a milk crate to use as a seat? Do you think that would raise concerns? A milk crate is definitely not a chair and a milk crate is not specifically prohibited in the rules. What if the milk crate was inside a canvas bag? If a bag is allowed, but not a milk crate, what we are saying is you can use a chair as long as it is a $140 bag, and not a $15 milk crate. Using something as a chair is a pretty easy to define thing, and probably less of a slippery slope than not using an actual chair, but allowing the use of some kind of a bag as a chair. 🤷‍♂️

@@clarson2916 Good luck getting a precision club going, sounds like you are going to have a lot of fun! These questions are exactly why I wouldn’t want to be a match director, because you have to figure out all the fine details and I enjoy shooting, not figuring out the specific rules. I think I’ve been to over 40 matches now and I’ve never seen anyone bring a milk crate (maybe it was hiding in their bag?). At some point you can only do so much though. Are you planning to check everyone’s shooting bags to ensure they don’t have something like a milk crate in them? That doesn’t sound fun for anyone. In cases like these, I would try to refer to the rules as much as possible when making these determinations. In this case, the rules (Section 5-D-2) specifically state that any shooting equipment not prohibited in the rules (like equipment at the range itself) or the stage brief can be used. I guess it’s up to you to determine if a milk crate is a viable shooting equipment compared to a shooting bag. The rule also does not limit how anyone uses their shooting equipment on a stage, so however they want to use that shooting equipment seems within the rules as long as it’s safe. Honestly, just have fun with it, talk to the people that show up and see what everyone thinks. Maybe just take a vote, or use the match funds to purchase a bag that everyone can use. I’d lean towards whatever seems in the rules and allows people to be safe, have fun, and get some hits to keep coming back and continue to progress in their shooting skills. Lots of potential to have fun and be fair to everyone.

The matches are typically held the second Sunday of each month if that is close to you, though because of Mother’s Day the one in May will be held on the third Sunday. If you are in the United States but not close to Ohio there are usually matches somewhere relatively close to your location and everyone shoots the same course of fire. NRL22 is also shot outside of the US in places like Canada, Australia, and elsewhere. Check out www.practiscore.com to search for matches near your location. If you need anything else just let me know.

No problem! There are a lot of different rifle models people use to fit a variety of budgets and interest levels. At the more accessible end you have the Ruger 10/22 and Ruger Precision Rimfire rifles. Moving up from there you see people use CZ 457s, the Tikka T1X, and Begara B14Rs. On the high end you have custom models like RimX and Vudoo rifles. I’m sure there are a bunch of great rifles I’m not listing but those seem to be the most popular. I began shooting with a Ruger Precision Rimfire rifle and love it, but it doesn’t have the fine tuned accuracy of my Vudoo rifle you see in my videos. I’d say having any 22lr chambered rifle that you can load up 10 rounds in a removable magazine, a decent first focal plane scope, and reliable ammunition that you know the elevation out to 100 yards and closer and you will be competitive any given month.

Thanks Austin! It’s always fun shooting together and having fun with the ECCL crew. I hope everyone can see how much fun these events are and decide to give it a try. Congratulations on finishing so high on the overall NRL22 leaderboards! I can’t believe you and John finished so close on the final rankings.

Definitely a fun match and the weather was better than snow too! Definitely great shooters, everyone is hitting the targets so much there is talk about needing to replace the targets! Lots of fun and friendly people, just a great time.

Slow down your transitions and plan how to build a position. Smooth is fast. You will save a lot more time and allow for better shot placements. Eg: pick up your smedium with your rifle

I appreciate the constructive feedback! The rifle is 22 pounds and the bag is another 12 pounds so it is hard to pick them up together but definitely something I should work on. If you have any more ideas please let me know. Thanks for the advice and watching the video.

Outstanding, I build competition rifles and balance is key factor for a rifle. Even with straight contour barrels, they weigh 18lbs configured. I would recommend using the Greyops mini pro and attached bag. Remove the brass weights and add the barricade stop. It weighs roughly 1.5lbs and can be detached very quickly. You can remove your chassis weights in lieu of this setup and stay 20lbs. Other than that, good shooting!

Nicely done. Technicaly you dropped 2 on stage 1. The cof states "Additionally each rung must be used at least once during the stage"
@22LRPhantom
@22LRPhantom 6 ай бұрын
Only if you can reach that top rung, otherwise you can re-use a rung according to the course of fire. I’m like an inch too short to reach the top rung so I cleared it with the match director before I started. Thanks for watching!

Is that a double tater tot I see on the saw horse stage?
@22LRPhantom
@22LRPhantom 6 ай бұрын
Stage 2 I figured it would be quicker to just have a bag at both ends rather than move the rifle and the bag. So this stage I did run a double Wiebad Tater Tot bag on the saw horse. Right now I’m helping someone develop a shooting bag that is even better so stay tuned!

That is the Cole Tac mega bag (www.cole-tac.com/product/mega-bag/). I wasn’t sure how often I would use it when I bought it but I keep finding ways to use it on stages.

This is a game called NRL22 (National Rifle League) and it is a ton of fun. It is a monthly competition that is held all over the county, so chances are there are some matches within a couple hours of you. The main website has the course of fire posted in the downloads section at NRL22.org and you can see the match everyone will shoot for the month. If you are interested in signing up, check out Practiscore.com and search for matches in your area (state is easy to find typically), just narrow the results with NRL22 matches. Give it a try, it’s a ton of fun. If you don’t have the equipment just contact the range ahead of time and they can probably make some available for you.
