Moral of this cif a EV happens to hit you state to your insurance company to request the third party during category L - you can sue.

The L category was Gor Electric vehicles with fewer than four wheels, if I remember correctly.

For info, the photocard licence has to be renewed every 3 years from the age of 70.

Can you take a driving test in a EV?if so can you drive a ICE car on that licence.

I might be wrong, but I was driving examiner for 23 years, now retired. When I was in the job Category L covered such things as those electrically powered milk-floats that the driver walked behind and controlled with a set of handlebar controls. I’m pretty sure that electric cars still fall into Category B. Oh, and licences don’t last 10 years, it’s the photo that does….👍

Don't understand if the dvla ( online) states your covered then you are despite what your actual lic says. Of massive importance to me though is dvla wanting your ni number. WHY data security ? for the division of government that sells our info to all and sundry. The dept deals with car reg owners and licenses. Thats all. Ni is for NHS and Hmrc. And on the subject of accuracy DVLA don't have the best record. Sending your licenee away and getting a different one back is a past time for them.

This is incorrect as others have stated, the L category was replaced/removed in 2001 and has nothing to do with electric motor vehicles- it was for light electric vehicles with 48 volt or lower motors such as milk floats. How can you publish this with out doing even the simplest fact check.

Electric vehicles INCLUDING ELECTRIC CARS ARE COVERED UNDER B and B1 REGARDLESS OF WEATHER L IS ON YOUR LICENCE (or online) OR NOT. L was originally put on licence as a category because some electric vehicles could be driven without the need to pass a standard car test BUT IT DOESNT APPLY TO THE MODERN ELCTRIC CAR. Your right. Those won't fit on the mk1 mondeo. It's the dish face will be too flat compared to the standard front wheel drive mondeo alloy. Do love a mk3 cortina with slot mags though. Seem to remember wolfrace had their factory in strood/Rochester in Kent. Might be wrong though.

Cat L was for Milk floats and has been redundant since 2001 i think. Modern electric cars are usually classed as B auto. Now i suspect as an aside that if you pass your test in a EV you might only get a Cat Bauto linence and not the full B category but you would have to check with DVLA for certain.

Yes, I've got an "l", but it's a lower case and grouped with about 6 other lower case letters. Your next updated license will probably have that listed if you're authorised for it online. Edit: I wouldn't drive an EV if you paid me, let alone own one of the ridiculous things.

You don't need a category L on your UK driving license if you have a category B and BE license, as these categories allow you to drive a variety of vehicles.

I have motorcycles on mine as well as cars and L is on the licence. I think I will see if I can buy an old 1960's milk float to drive around in ha ha

People that have a category B license can automatically drive category L vehicles. Category L refers to milk floats and such.

I think this is more likely to be a coc* up. Probably refers to a milk float etc but no numpty in government put two and two together.

Been going to classic car shows for 12 years now, and THIS gathering/show/whatever you want to call it, was/is by far the very best of all. So much to see and do, and puts all the usual suspects to shame, both with their organising skills and pricing structure. 280 mile 'round trip for me, but worth every last mile and smile. So much looking forward to the next Rustival date, and long may they continue at Gaydon.

Happy to say it is one of the best car shows I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. It was the people that made the difference.

Well said! Like a lot of us "Rustees" have said, the reason every vehicle is welcome is because the vehicles are only there to bring the people together. It's a gathering more than anything. Plus it's one of the few where I felt truly comfortable.
