A barefoot princess with a hypnotic voice. She was only 9 years old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, an American singer/songwriter. He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody. As you continue your journey of discovering Angelina, you will come to realise that she does her own arrangements of most of the cover songs she sings. The differences may not be immediately discernible on first listening to them, but they are there. There may be a subtle change in tempo or tone, or more inflexion on some words, or a phrase may differ in pitch from the original. If vocal perfection could be demonstrated this is the example, and on top of the vocals , this is her own arrangement of this 1956 Jay Hawkins classic. She has taken it to new level of master craft.

Since your are the new guy in town, here is a longish comment I created many years ago after discovering Angelina: Don't feel bad about being speechless and totally amazed. That is the norm for someone who has not seen Angelina Jordan before. She started singing when she was 1-1/2 years old and, yes, there is a video of that. Her grandmother liked jazz and played her records for Angie when she was very little. Before long, Angelina was using an iPad and listening to all the jazz greats, listening and learning their ways of presenting a song, and putting them away in her toolkit. With her perfect pitch, unusual voice, arrangement and performance skills, she is headed for the moon. So, you see that at nine years and two months old she is already a professional and accomplished artist. She chose this song as a tribute to the original singer, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, whose picture is shown in the beginning. The papers she handed to the band leader were her last-minute changes for him. This performance is not typical of Angelina but shows that she can perform in any genre, although she prefers jazz. She always performs barefoot and there is an interesting story behind that. She has been in the public eye since she auditioned for Norway's Got Talent in 2013, when she was 7, and won it at age 8. Now she is 18 and was signed to Republic Records as a highest priority new artist in 2020. Her recent releases of originals and covers are beyond superlative. Angie's musical abilities are beyond mere mortal understanding!

You might also want to check out the following rehearsal; it's Angelina Jordan & band jamming to "Portrait of a Child,” which was re-interpreted from Screamin’ Jay Hawkin’s “Portrait of a Man.” Basically, it's AJ jamming along with these great musicians, and this was either a bit before or maybe a bit after when she recorded "I Put a Spell on You,” which she did when she was 9 years and 2 months old, and there were 3 of the same musicians that were in this wonderful room. You'll see very quickly why they listen to her and call her the "boss." I'm sorry it doesn't have English subtitles; there was one that used to have it, but somehow, it disappeared. Amazing reaction, my friend! Thanks for reminding me why I became a channel member from the start👍 I knew that this recommendation would show up rather quickly, as it is considered as one of her very best performances. And the fact that she had just turned 9 here (9 years 2months) AND did the arrangement herself are SOME of the reasons behind that consideration. What she did here shouldn't really be possible, but yet we can all witness the proof that is is. For Angelina it is. Not for the vast majority of human kind. This was recorded a whole year after she had won Norway's Got Talent, so we already knew that she could sing. But hearing her in total BEAST mode like we do here, was still a shock. Btw, the " Hey, hey, hey, hey! Watch out!!! " part is what's called a callback or call-and-response in music, often heard and used in the jazz genre 🙂 I WILL try to add a link to the EXACT performance by Screamin' Jay Hawkins that Angelina based HER arrangement on.
