My favorite thing. I wonder who honked the horn with the full jingle bells show X2? I think that was very good. Csx engineers would mostly do a full hornshow and ns Rarely maybe cn up or bnsf too.

Super great video, I don’t think I ever saw such black smoke come out of locomotives in the United States. This was a rare scene! Earns a Like from me.👍 I also record videos of trains if you’re interested.

The center work / tool car looks like it has a big fuel tank on it, and a large radiator / heat exchanger. What is that car ? Is there a generator in there ? Is there a grid heater for braking in there ? What is the center work / tool car for ? What does it have in it ? :o

Hi, @longmontrailfan7972, and many thanks for a beautiful scenic video of the wide-open country. I've never been alone on the plains out West, being from the Northeast. At 3:43 I was curious if only the SD70 diesel locomotive was running the train and that the Big Boy was idle, as I heard no piston chugging nor exhaust from the Big Boy stack.

I hate to burst every ones bubble. But some time between June 30th when it left Cheyenne, and July 4th, not sure where it was. But the Diesel Engine was back. Now this is due to 1 or more things. 1. And maybe the biggest reason. To help with Dynamic Braking. They may not have added enough cars. But from July 4th onward it had a Diesel Engine. 2. Maybe the Big Boy need a tad of help on the long sections between fuel and water stops. But, using Semi's with Tankers. They could have staged fuel and what when ever it was needed. 3. And maybe the worst reason, The PTC maybe has malfunctioned or failed completely. Since I live in Cheyenne, when the Big Boy returns on July 26th, I shall en-dever to find out what happened.

I guess the 4014 is legal to run by itself since it has PTC installed & tested. They still need to minimize the wear on the engine brakes. Hence a diesel with working dynamic brakes makes sense. I understand that the UP also allows trains to run at higher speeds if it has enough dynamic braking capability. I forget which engine, 844 or 3985, had a diesel control stand installed so that they could control the diesel from the steam engine's cab. Talk about double heading with yourself. That may not be practical with the PTC control stand installed. And just for giggles and grins, you could have the diesel in dynamic braking to make 4014 work harder, and make more noise. Neat!

I may be mistaken, but last I heard, those freight cars aren’t for revenue service; they are the main braking force. Freight car brake shoes are dime-a-dozen, while the specialized brake shoes of a 4000 series locomotive aren’t exactly thick on the ground, so the steam crew uses the braking force of the train behind it to slow/stop, using the locomotive’s independent brakes as a static parking brake to negate most of the wear and tear.
@Rocker-12346 ай бұрын
yup, bail off the loco and burn the cars up. cause car brakes are cheap as chips compared to the custom made shoes that are gonna take a long ass time to source and replace on the engine. hell breaking was the second biggest reason for the diesels before it got PTC certed
