Anyone of a certain age think this music slightly resembles 'Hide and Seek' by Howard Jones? I could always hear a similarity back in 1984!
@ricardlupus

The similarity has honestly never struck me - and I was quite the Howard Jones fan at the time. But listening to the advert in that light now, especially the chord progression at 0:45, I can understand what you mean.

Hi my name is Ed , I have a 15 model was wondering how to connect with rca jacks from reel to reel to computer to record old reels on computer, thank you
@ricardlupus
@ricardlupus 6 ай бұрын
There is a group of three RCA connectors on the back; the middle one is labelled PRE AMP and is a line level output which should provide a reasonable signal for a sound card. The model 15 is mono, so there is only one output, but the tape head is actually stereo, and the channel that is not output through PRE AMP is connected to the output labelled FREE HEAD, so technically you can play back stereo tapes. However, FREE HEAD is a low level non amplified output, which requires a microphone level amplifier with appropriate playback equalization curve.

I was first familiar with one of these at Christmas 1964 (I was aged eight) I am now on my third one in 2023 (now aged 67) They really knew how to build them back then. The first one met it's demise when I overused it's amplification feature to power a mobile disco. The second one was still operative but ended up in a skip in a garage clear out (along with an all plastic bodied one) The third one is still going strong having been bought on ebay (when I discovered it) I have recently bought the plastic bodied version again for spares, though it does work. Also got a beautiful Stellaphone version of the same and the Cosser version again for spares. The Philips Tape Recorder book is a must have for anyone interested in these machines (1963 reprinted 1965) Good Luck!

This particular model is surprisingly resilient. Also, it belongs to the early era when Philips used high quality rubber so the rubber parts usually last well past what could be expected of them.

This machine has always been my "Holy Grail" of vintage tape recorders,so to speak. It's just such a beautiful piece of machinery. Interesting side note: Did you now that the electronics for the mixer section was built in a modular fashion? It was made so in order to customise the machine for different purposes; you could for example have microphone preamplifiers on all the stereo channels and use it to record a small band live. Or you could swap the modules out and have line level modules on all channels. Or even RIAA modules on all channels. All the different modules were available separately. Thanks for posting this video. Greetings from Denmark.

I have one as well (used to have two actually). My model is a 4 track, but has an extra switch so it can playback 2 track tapes. I also have two RIAA input modules, as I was using it in a small mobile discotheque. Unfortunately, only the tape speed 19 cm/s work well, the two other tape speeds at running too slow, due to mechanical issues. So, if anyone has good suggestions as how to repair it, I am all ears to hear. Regards Claus

I had one of these back in the late Seventies/early Eighties. It seemed pretty old to me at the time. I put my guitar into the mike input and with the lever switched to PA mode it was amazing when turned up to distortion! I figured out a hack to allow monitoring one track while recording on the other, so I could do lead, plus rhythm or bass using the guitar bass strings. I gave it away when someone gave me an old proper small guitar valve amp. I gave that away eventually in The Nineties. I wish I had kept both.

The first order of the day is to replace the Rifa capacitors that are all over the amplifiers. As they age the effects are not subtle, and complete loss of sound is one outcome.

@ricardlupus
@ricardlupus Жыл бұрын
The 2 HiFi is an interesting design with it's part mechanical, part electrical speed change mechanism, being based on the older 2-speed-only design for the ordinary model 2. I prefer the design used in the model 3 and all subsequent models though. I had a 2 HiFi once, but for some reason, I could never get it to run at the proper speed, it was always noticably slower.

Same way as I switched it on. The volume control knob on the left doubles as a power switch at its most counterclockwise position, so with a quick flick of the hand, the machine can be powered on or off.

bought this exact model for 8 dollars at goodwill store... spent 4 hours inside it and i like the simplistic mexhanism but the internal rubber drive wheel is so hard it causes huge wow and flutter as well as the speed is a tad lower than it should be. Capstain is quite weak too....especially at lower speeds. internal amp is skunked but rca plugs work. Cleaned the internal playback/amp/rec rails inside the machine but its still very finicky to get good sound- i try not to touch them....not bad for a maxhine thats 50 years old....

My mother used that thing to record her guitar/singing , we also had Tandberg television and radio models, amplifiers, and later on computers. Tandberg was Norway's Elon Musk back in the day, but he ended his own life after his electronic plant failed in 1978, the competition from the Asian marked became too influential.

@@tomwillaert3363 You could fathomably use it as an echo pedal, although the range of echo times is limited to the three speeds available on the machine. As a former Montrealer, who frequently rode the electrics in the 60s, heavily in the 70s and early 80s, before moving West, I am delighted that you shared this little movie; shot by your father, at a time when the Deux Montagnes Line still had good CN paint on the cars and it all looked as though the rolling stock wouldn’t be falling apart through neglect. I always had a special liking for the bridges over the track at M’ont Royal and shot dozens of slides from there, including one day, one of a Z-1 with just one car, carrying Pierre Trudeau to some function down the line. I found one of my old films of the TTC one day, and did exactly the same, putting it out for people to share. Again, thanks.
