Recovery points.(Structural Engineer here). The chassis members are made from 2 mm steel. You can install v strong Jate rings but the bolts will start to pull through the walls of the chassis rails under load. You need to increase the wall thickness at the anchor points by welding on doubler plates (say 3mm thick) which will spread the load. Of course the standard Jate rings won't fit over the doubler plates so they need to be modified, but you will at leadt have strong recovery points.

Bill, you honour me greatly by imparting your highly educated and experienced knowledge here. Thank you!! I will immediately start researching into what you've said and see how I can implement it in the future. Warm regards, John

@@auto-funatics7147 No honour mate, just a bit of commonsense. If I were a bit younger I'd think about marketing a recovery point kit with doubler plates (which would need to be welded to the chassis rails) and widened Jate rings.

What an experience. Thank you for sharing. Do you think vehicle weight was an issue?
@auto-funatics7147
@auto-funatics7147 9 ай бұрын
So glad you enjoyed it Toblas! There were many many factors, chief of them being that I didn't "walk the way" first, else I might have realised how soft the soil in the stream was. Also, from the amount of sinkholes that I had to avoid coming in, should be an indication of treacherous ground that could give way. My vehicle was empty when trying to cross the stream, so no I don't think weight was the issue there. Deflated tyres helped delay the inevitable though - so that's the most important step in the right direction 👍🏻

You're right! But what else do we have? The bridal works... until you don't use the bridal 😅. We really have a problem of there being no properly rated products for us available, unless one goes custom - and that's not tested and rated!

Hey just to add a note about the defender ‘recovery’ points… they do tell you under towing section in the manual it says that they not for off road recovery.
@auto-funatics7147
@auto-funatics7147 11 ай бұрын
You're absolutely right - but as Marcus says, it's all we've got - but using them with a bridle to distribute the load evenly between the two seems to work. The reason why mine snapped was because everyone was tired, and so we thought just using the one would be fine that once... Oops 😬. I couldn't include that part of the discussion because it was quite a heated discussion 😅. A debatable subject for sure 😁!

@@auto-funatics7147 ahah yeah I totally understand 😁 yeah I was looking into what could actually work as a proper defender recovery point for defenders and not much out there at all! I have the pin and ball 2 in 1 tow hitch which I thought I just use the pin and job down but been told can’t use the pin, so I think when poo has hit the fan use what you got and get out :)
