Thank you. I was able to see the first 2 live but then I had to get back to sleep - am 6 hours behind Norway. It would be great if they do a second nest.

I'd not seen quite a bit of the stage from #2 leaving to #3. They were really bouncing off the walls then. When I saw it live, I really wondered if the last one had given up when it crouched back in the cup and wouldn't take any food, but then a minute and a half later it perked up and fed a few times before following the others, I guess it was just exhausted from being jumped on by its siblings.
@RailCowBirds4 ай бұрын
The real reason was it was burned 1 1/2 days later compared to the other ones. It was the youngest and 17 days old on the day of fledging. :)

I almost felt sorry for the last one, after everyone else had left. Good luck out there, little fellas. Watch out for cats! And eagles. And windows. And cars.

Me too. The way it just shrunk back into the the nest bowl. He/she was born almost 1 1/2 day later than the others, and was much smaller than the siblings on fledge day.

Tits don't seem like something very dangerous, but in a world of tiny songbirds they are quite feared. Many smaller songbirds are weaker than them and when it comes to nesting, there's no mercy for anyone. Sometimes tits are able to kill their intruders, so I can't complety now how much terrified that flycatcher must have been

The thing is right, these species breed in the same nesting spaces, often even in the same nests, one after the other. The flycatcher would return later from Africa and would occupy the available site after the tit. But because of climate change they're returning sooner and sooner, and so fights over the nests occur.
@Sheepdog13146 ай бұрын
Ah yes. Climate change. Sure.
@RailCowBirds6 ай бұрын
No, they are not returning any sooner than before. The Tits have always started building their nests here in end of march - end of April, with May as the incubation time and chicks fledging in June. The fly catcher usually arrives in May and will be out looking for suitable nesting space in the middle of building time/egg laying time for the tits, which leads to lots of battles. The male Flycatcher arrives first to find suitable places, then to present them to the females when they arrive. Everything is timed according to the hatching of caterpillars and other insects. Yes, the climate change has starting to change things here with more erratic weather in general. More rain, shorter but more intense winters etc etc. We've lost about 60 days with snow since 1970 in this area, and the glaciers are melting at an alarming rate.

No, Little Peep. Nothing has changed since the last time you looked in here. You can re-measure and call the inspector back out, but it's the same box. The one with the rustic door might have a little more water damage, but that's about it. Just pick one and fill out the paperwork! 😃 Your Pilfinks have some cool lines and markings.
@RailCowBirds6 ай бұрын
LOL! right? NB1 is in a prime location protected from the effects of weather as the box is on the North facing wall. Same with NB2 which is nicely placed in a pine. NB3 is on a birch and subjected to the weather coming in from the west, as is NB4 which is just plain in the open covered with some shrubs. hopefully those shrubs will later become trees. :)
@gth0426 ай бұрын
The flooplan is the same, but they definitely have variety in location. I'd pick the birch and deal with the weather. In the US, it's fairly common for houses on the market awhile to go off-market for a month or two and come back for a new "splash". I wonder if covering the holes for a day or three might entice them to make the move. I know birds aren't people, but we are talking about people! 😆 I hope you are enjoying the weekend and having fun with nature.
