I learned the term "gaslighting" around the time this was uploaded. Thinking back, I'm wondering if this was actually the thing that made me realize that a couple of my relatives had been gaslighting me for decades. Anyway, I'm glad I watched this again.

The woman who played Maggie Walsh appeared in ER as a character based on a real woman, and that woman is the reason my parents met and eventually got married and had kids. I had not seen that episode of ER before I watched Buffy, so watching the ER episode was... weird... because I was watching a character from Buffy pretend to be a beloved figure in my family who died 7 years before I was even born. (If you've seen the episode of ER Walsh's actress appears in, you'll understand why she died)

An interesting point that I noticed only recently. Buffy hates Spike in this episode, but for the most part she shows indifference or sometimes even compassion towards vampires and other demons. And I do think it's a little strange considering Spike was a much more likable villain in season 2 than Angelus was. I understand Buffy's hatred of Drusilla, but what's Spike got to do with it? And then it occurred to me that the feelings that Spike and Buffy show in Something Blue might actually have started much earlier.

You make great points, especially about grain. I don’t like grain but it does help cover up some parts of films that may have aged badly. The best example of this I can think of is comparing the dvd and 4K editions of Lord of the rings. Those full remasters have lost all the colouring and saturation and losing the grain in places like Moria and shelobs lair takes away a lot of the sentiment of the films imo.

I think they should've gave Gwendolyn 3 or 4 episodes. She could've been in the background for some comedy and just giving Giles the business and would've gave Faith a little birt more development and this episode a little more punch.

Could be totally off, but with Willow's dreams always revolving around costumes/plays, it could be interpreted that she feels everyone around her Is "masking" or hiding their true selves. Or that Willow interprets other people to be caricatures. Tara (and Oz) being some of the ONLY people to NOT wear costumes is interesting, since it shows that Willow looks at them differently than everyone else. (And Xander is one too... all three are people that Willow has been romantically in love with 👀)

They keep Buffy like that to keep Angel in LA. Yes he's made his choice but if Buffy was Buffy in Angel how would you explain him not following her home? Though he sort it does that here...

Dude, I rewatch this every 6 months or so. It's a triumph of analysis. The section on Xander's dream, especially the end, always makes me tear up. I feel the same way. I also noticed this time, that the image the scoobs' dreams share of Buffy as not that bright, still a child, and no more than a killer can be seen as Buffy thinking these things about herself in her spirit, heart, and mind. I think season five bears this out.

The reason we all hate Parker more than any other villain on the show is much the same as the reason pretty much everyone hates Dolores Umbridge more than Voldemort: We all KNOW an Umbridge or a Parker, whereas a Voldemort or The First- a completely super evil Big Bad guy- doesn't exist in our everyday lives. Just like with the good, we relate to what we know- we tend to like good characters we can relate to more than good characters we can't (or, in the case of someone like Oz, someone we can aspire to be as chill as- not that he isn't necessarily relatable), and hate the bad characters we've personally experienced in the past the most. As you said during that arc, it's PART of the reason Angelus worked so well- because he wasn't just another vampire, or even a friend of theirs that went bad... he was Buffy's boyfriend, first love, and first LOVER, who went bad 'BECAUSE' of that, and then used it against her, and everyone she loved... which, while not to those extremes, a lot of people can relate to. (I put because in quotation marks because while the moment of true happiness was the cause, it wasn't Buffy's FAULT, which that because, unquoted, might imply)

Here' a fun lil nugget to make everyone hate Warren even more. While Buffy was consoling the April Bot, her own mother was dying at home. Alone. If Warren hadn't pulled his 🤬 then Buffy would've gotten home sooner. I'm not insinuating that Buffy could've saved Joyce but at least she might not have died alone.

While I agree with you that Xander was a total dipshit to Buffy (forgive the paraphrase), that makes me find his declaration to Anya more compelling, as I think that he'd previously been projecting his feelings onto Buffy.

Why not tell xander and willow? Because Xander is an idiot who goes against the consensus of the group as soon as he thinks he knows better.he probably would have followed buffy "just to make sure angel plays ball" and given the game away! As for willow: she is a terrible liar, at least to her friends

Willows subconscious may've made Buffy a "vamp" as she was the beginning of "vampires" into her previously normal life. It plays on the constant, inseparable darkness of Buffys character.

The Wes/Illyria “lie to me” scene is without doubt the most tear jerking moment in the Buffy verse. Wes just loves her so much and has been in such a dark place for so long so when you hear him say “oh yes please” you can hear that all of the darkness and walls built around his heart have been stripped away and he is ready to be completely vulnerable in his final moments. The actors just nail it too, it’s heart wrenching in the best way possible.

I watched this show as it aired when I was in my late teens from around midway in season 2 and got hooked. To this day I have loved and adored many other television shows, but Buffy is still my favorite. Eminently rewatchable and has some of the best episodes of television ever filmed and legitimately the best musical episode in TV history. The thing about this show that really puts it over the top is its characters and writing. If you give this show a chance these characters will become some of your favorite characters in all of media. They are complex, have meaningful growth arcs, and are brilliantly acted. This show sticks with you.

I’m making my way through the show and this episode is just awful. Buffy’s entire speech towards the end can be broken down to “other people have problems so yours don’t matter. Suck it up butter cup nobody cares”. That is awful. The entire episode has the vibe of a person who didn’t have these problems trying to get people that do to stop talking because it’s bumming them out. You having boyfriend problems or failing a test is not the same as what he’s dealing with. Devaluing a persons problems is not helpful it’s infuriating. This entire episode brought back old issues I thought I had moved past and these clapping seals talking about how great it is drives me insane. I can just tell most of you weren’t like this guy you were the people outside Buffy was talking about. News flash your issues aren’t the same you’re not like him you have it easier.

I didn't really get the knights in my early Buffy days, but I appreciate them now.... The same goes for this episode, really. Glory is so otherworldly, and I think adding the knights adds to the depth of her character. We were introduced to Glory through a monk. She shares a body with a human, she has a slue of followers. No other villain gets such an elaborate back story (aside from angelus). So I think tbr knights serve as universe building - just not the one we're use to seeing, but it would make sense that the lives outside of the scoobies are just as complex and that only adds to Sunnydale universe building as well. Also, let's not forget this season coincides with Angel season 2😅 What were Ben's motivations? Great question! I can come to with a few guesses. The first one being that made the writers fell short in trying to sell is the idea on how much ben really liked Buffy and hus judgment was clouded by that? Maybe his ego is so big that he thought he could overpower Glory's transformation? I mean, we've kinda seen that before, and it doesn't seem like mich of a stretch of the Imagination - that he's supposed to be dollowing a hypocratic oath to save others. Maybe since he lost his job he just said *uck it, and is testing the waters with how comfortable he is to kill Dawn and/or just has a strong urge/pull to be near the choas since the outcome determines his own life. Or maybe Ben, just buckles under pressure and just couldn't come up with a good excuse to say no, lol. The parallels between Ben and Buffy are interesting too. Season 1 Buffy was not fully committed to slaying and sacrificing herself. If Dawn is Buffy's less burdened Child self and Ben parallels her, is that the part of Buffy/Dawn that's dying? Buffy ends Glory to save Dawn or herself from darkness (slayer power unchecked) and Ben is what's left he the unactualized version, the version that does comphrehend/accept the gift or sacrifice his death could be the symbol of both Dawn and Buffy moving forward. Dawn of course, understands sacrifice in the same way Buffy had learned through her sacrifice of Angel in season 2. Interestingly, Giles is the one to prevent the possibility of Glory resurfacing, preventing a Slayer or leader of stone because he recognizes the beauty of Buffy is her duality, her compassion, leadership, and strength - not her strength alone, but her wisdom and that's what makes Buffy renowned- like Santa and Buddha all wrapped into one.

You guys bitched about this so much that they removed it from all streaming services and never released it physically good job. Im sorry but i dont want to watch this in garbage ass sd especially the first 2 seasons they look like dog shit so thanks alot for all the whining. But this hd version is honestly not that bad and i had to order a bootleg from china because you cant even buy this on vudu or itunes now. It is currently on tubi tho. Theres no way you can convince me the hd versions look worse. They have issues for sure thats not debateable but in 2024 i dont want to watch something that looks like it was shot on a fucking cell phone. Wish they would just upscale the show to 4k leave the original aspect ratio and filters and re release it
