My Dad took me to the Air Fair in 1968. It was my first airshow. It was also my first flight as Dad paid for a pleasure flight for us before the flying started. So many display teams, including Le Patrouille de France, Les Diables Rouges, Il Frecce Tricolori, the Red Arrows, and Simon's Sircus with four Sea Vixens. Bob Hoover performed his famous energy management display routine in his Shrike Commander. There was also a Lancaster in the static park, open to visitors to raise funds for restoration. My ever generous Dad (a WW2 Bomber Command veteran) bought me a ticket to see inside. A magical , memorable day. I took my own family to the Air Fair in the 1990s.

Some years ago I was a chauffeur for a wealthy Dorset based couple, who celebrated a birthday with an afternoon at Biggin Hill which included several Spitfires and all the then remaining members of The Few. I was able to chat with the men who were restoring a Spitfire in one of the hangars there, which was extremely interesting. Very movingly a Spitfire which had been crash landed on a beach during the D Day invasion by a Polish pilot was also present and he was reuntied with the machine for the first time.

Lol, you should have seen the world in 1975... I once had my bottle of whine opened by a policeman on our way from Paris to Nice because we forgot an opener. Took an airplane from Amsterdam to London where we all decided to smoke hash instead of sigarettes and ended up spending the night with the female flightcrew in a hotelclub. GenZ would have begged daddy goverment for more restrictions and regulations upon seeing so much fun and freedom. 😂🎉

The crowd were chanting " get out, get out" as the P51 started it's final dive. Some of us "no, no, no." I thought there was no way from that height, a cold feeling crept over me, a man was about to die here. The canopy tumbled, and then something else, the pilot, but to late, the aircraft was almost down. And then the parachute burst open by pure miracle, just in time. A great cheer went up from the crowd and people clapped with absolute joy and relief. At the same time all eyes were drawn to the Sky Raider as this must be critically damaged and about to hit the ground but this was downwind and still flying and maintaining height, an almost impossible outcome. But sure enough, it turned and lined up to land and touched down and rolled out left wing high and on one wheel for some distance until it stopped close to us. The pilot stayed in the cockpit for a very long time before clambering down and inspecting the damage. A dreadful responsibility to shoulder. As close to fatal as is possible to come and walk away, for both parties.

Oh the 'Princess Elizabeth ',; Apparently applied to a pilots P51 while he was off for the day, the Royals visited the squadron and the Mustang was given the Princess Elizabeth name as a P.R. press thing. When the pilot came back to see what they'd painted on his plane he was NOT happy. Can't say i blame him, im British, but as a fighter pilot that's pretty lame to have as your nose art, even more so if you're an American.

Glad you enjoyed it and yes , well spotted. I checked my Legends 05 programme and it was indeed painted white at the end of May. Another anomaly was the P39 which had a lot of access panels removed but was being readied for flight at the end of the day. The explanation is sadly my camcorder was on its last legs and only recorded intermittently. The resulting last two tapes are fragmented and difficult to assess. We must have visited Duxford before the end of May and I assumed all the footage was part of the Legends Practice day. The Legends tape that will follow is quite short (camcorder Problems again) and I had to buy a mini disc camcorder as a replacement which was never as good as the old tape one! Luckily I managed to revive it and digitise the tapes as they were such great shows.

Glad you enjoyed it . Most likely steam. The radiator is buried in the wing and if taxied too slowly its my understanding it was prone to overheat on run up before the oil and other checks were aok. A fast taxi gave more time. At least thats my recollection of an account by Dave Southwood on flying the P39.
