I was there with my good mate Dieter who was nuts about ME 109s. I was going through the outbuildings to get something out of my car when i bumped into Cats Eyes Cunningham! I think he had a soft top BMW which made us both laugh at the irony. 😂 Seemed a very nice man.

Between The Fighter Collection and The Old Flying Machine Company they have restored many historic fighters to the air and keep them there. They have done wonders for the warbird restoration movement in this country. Thank you Stephen Gray and Ray Hannah.

Remember this well. If I remember rightly the big July show used to be called 'The Classic Fighter Display' before it eventually took this name. This and the North Weald Fighter Meet were just incredible shows.

@@Duxford-Legends On one of the wetter shows we were chatting to a Victor Bomber crew, (converted to refuelling) and we managed to get onto the aircraft and sit in the cockpit, great memories. On a dry sunny show, for a small fee you could get into the B17 Memphis Belle, up to the bomb bay, several of us helped a wheelchair bound guy up to the cockpit. A shame the show had to come to an end.

Oh the 'Princess Elizabeth ',; Apparently applied to a pilots P51 while he was off for the day, the Royals visited the squadron and the Mustang was given the Princess Elizabeth name as a P.R. press thing. When the pilot came back to see what they'd painted on his plane he was NOT happy. Can't say i blame him, im British, but as a fighter pilot that's pretty lame to have as your nose art, even more so if you're an American.

Gosh lucky lad ! You might remember the Webb Aviation Hangar very friendly people. Webb Senior was an ex Beaufighter pilot, his son ran the business servicing light aircraft, another engineer was rebuilding DH Doves and another designed his own RC Helicopters. Outside were WW2 gun butts and wooden shacks. There was no security then!

Fantastic footage as always. This one is particularly helpful to me for a modelling project I'm working on. However, there is something that is confusing me. All the footage I've seen of Flying legends 2005 shows the catalyna in white. Yet here she is still in her old colours. Can you shed any light on the matter please?

Glad you enjoyed it and yes , well spotted. I checked my Legends 05 programme and it was indeed painted white at the end of May. Another anomaly was the P39 which had a lot of access panels removed but was being readied for flight at the end of the day. The explanation is sadly my camcorder was on its last legs and only recorded intermittently. The resulting last two tapes are fragmented and difficult to assess. We must have visited Duxford before the end of May and I assumed all the footage was part of the Legends Practice day. The Legends tape that will follow is quite short (camcorder Problems again) and I had to buy a mini disc camcorder as a replacement which was never as good as the old tape one! Luckily I managed to revive it and digitise the tapes as they were such great shows.

Given the technology, media of the time and weather conditions, this is exceptionally well filmed and excellent footage. It's so nice to see such a good range of historic jets and piston power, sadly with so many of them no longer flying - the RNHF Seahawk and Sea Fury, the now retired Tornado, the Sabre and Shooting Star. A great 7 Spitfire set piece and the dependable Sally B B17. That solo aerobatic performance was amazing. Thanks for the memories!

Hi Beat, glad you liked it. Steam, the P39 is prone to overheating as its radiator is buried in the wing . I believe a fast taxi run helps keep the temperature down so that it can be run up just prior to take off
@Duxford-Legends
@Duxford-Legends Жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it . Most likely steam. The radiator is buried in the wing and if taxied too slowly its my understanding it was prone to overheat on run up before the oil and other checks were aok. A fast taxi gave more time. At least thats my recollection of an account by Dave Southwood on flying the P39.

HI James, agree, the early shows, especially Legends were amazing from 1994 to 2007. Multiple aircraft starting, taxing, taking off, landing and displaying all at the same time breathtakingly awsome. Thanks to the TFC, OFMC, ARCO , the pilots and many others for over a decade of stunning air shows.

Marvellous. Some great memories of aircraft and schemes that are no longer around, with some still familiar ones too. Great quality for analogue and good tripod work. The original 'Sally-B' artwork looks very amateurish compared to today's figure. If only TFC could reinstate Flying Legends again at IWM Duxford - we can only hope!

Thanks, agree Legends at Duxford was, for me, the ultimate air show. Historic site, a huge museum and a display which year on year never ceased to amaze. Having found the old tapes and camcorder I have tried to convert the analogue direct to digital to minimise loss of quality. Thank you for you channel it is a pleasure to see the aircraft and air shows from another perspective. As a live event no show or viewpoint is the same.

I remember seeing a video of a reporter standing at the head of the runway, and the 340 made about the shortest turn on finals I have ever seen, scaring future passengers not to mention the reporter🙂 I think the theme song of this show was Rober Miles's Children.. 1996 was a year of change, lots of old stuff but the new kids came to the block and blew away the oldies.
