Sounds great. I have the same bike 1984 Gl1200 aspencade. I just replaced the old Yuasa lead acid battery for an AGM battery from Amazon. I was a little skeptical at first, but I will never go back to lead acid Yuasa Batteries again.

I just wanted to say, i have the exact same problem too. any updates on this? I ordered the orange box, but time is of the essence.. I have 6 receivers and each one of them has this issue. so it cannot be the refceiver (i would assume). I tested on two computers and with two USB to Serial gadgets. To no avail. Thanks for any insights!

Hi Arron, the exhaust was stock with modification to include extended pipes. Basically it is the stock Honda system.

6.7.21. I changed out the stock shunt R/R, with a SH847 Series type R/R, sourced from roadstercycle.com after replacing the cooked®️ Stator in my friend’s 1984 Standard model. It runs much cooler & puts out 14.5 vdc @ idle. He paid $500 for it with 65k miles. Changed the head gaskets, valve stem seals, water pump, & clutch slave cylinder rebuild. Greased rear driveshaft splines & wheel to rear differential with Guard Dog Moly 570 paste (73% Moly).

Not yet. Hobby King has agreed to send me a replacement receiver. Also I ordered the OrangeRX program box. There is not much I can do until it gets here. I have a thread on RCgroups about this. In the mean time I have a RadioMaster R161 receiver that I will use for my build. I really want to make this work. The RR12RDTS is advertised to have a 3 Km range and a wide range of telemetry control. I haven't found much on the web about this receiver. We will see how it goes. www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?3889583-OrangeRX-SR12T-AKA-RR12DTS

@@tarasf4535 TF - I got the OrangeRX program box on Saturday. I just bound the RR12RDTS to my Radio Master TX16S and wirelessly connected the receiver to the program box. I was able to reset the receiver variables with the program box. I couldn't connect it to the computer to run the Hobby King rx_secure_configurator program. The computer com port wouldn't see the program box. I didn't try very hard, as I was able to do the configuration changes wirelessly (easily) through the program box. I just set the telemetry to MSP. Default was analog. I have more to figure out about the setup. The receiver is going in a 450 sized quad camera rig running Arducopter. I think the program box is a must have if you want to reconfigure the receiver.

does the clutch cover need to be removed to get rear cover off or can they be removed as one ?
@jimpalmer19693 жыл бұрын
The Factory Shop Manual says to remove the clutch cover, so that is what I did. The Clymer manual doesn't state to remove the cover. I would expect it would be quite fiddly to try to reinstall the rear cover with the clutch cover in place on the rear cover. The clutch disengagement mechanism in the clutch cover must be aligned when the cover is installed. If you try to do this with the clutch cover on the rear cover it might be difficult to get the rear cover dowel pins aligned and have the clutch disengagement align to the back of the clutch at the same time. Honda made the cover separate from the rear cover for a reason. Let me know what you find and good luck with your project.

Howdy, I think I heard you are just north of me, I live in south King County. I have just finished rebuilding the front forks, the rear shocks, the water pump, new timing belts, rebuilt all 3 brake calibers. Then after studying several you tubes, decided as I was this close, disassembled, to rebuild the starter clutch. Last year it, the starter, several times just spun, never turned over the motor, I would never be closer than this to do that job, engine removal. Rebuilt the starter too. I hope to get the engine back in the frame next, then reassemble the rest of the bike. It has been nice videos like yours that has given me the courage to do some of the things I have done, big thanks!. Mine is the SEi with fuel injection and miles of wires, just hoping that I can get all of them connected, phew!

Hi Charles, thanks for the comment. I can't believe my 1200 will be starting it's third riding season since being put back on the road. Good luck with your GW, the old four cylinder bikes are great.

@@jimpalmer1969 That is do good to hear! 3rd season! Yay! How many miles each season? My goal for all this put off maintenance is to have one more cross country ride, without issues hopefully. Was a bit hard to find parts. 2500 miles from Chicago to Auburn. Don't want to ride both ways, getting older, LOL. so I will ship it to Chicago, then fly out and ride it home. You seem to have some electrical skills I don't have, mechanical, yes. May want to ask a question when I get stuck. Thanks for the quick response!
@jimpalmer19693 жыл бұрын
@@charlesfowler5791Actually I started riding it back in july 2017, so it's a little longer than the third season. I had a lot of trouble getting the carbs sorted out and that took into 2018. After that it ran very good and I started to rack up the miles on it. So I've added about 10K miles to it since it was put back on the road. It has around 72K on it now. Last June I did the Iron Butt 1000. I found the group on Meetup. We started in Northgate (Seattle) at 5:00AM, picked up I-90 and drove past Missoula Mt to a small town Dawson Mt, Turned around and ended at Issaquah at about 11:00PM. I clocked 1150 miles that day. COVID has put a damper on riding. My main riding buddy and I like to go to eastern OR for a week of camping during July. While you have the engine out think about replacing the stator. It is a weak link in the GL1200 series. They don't like the heat and mine died after a week in eastern OR. We were pushing the bikes in 95-100 degree weather. The guys on GoldwingFacts.com recommended Rick's Motorsport stator, it was worth it. 2500 miles from Chicago sounds like a good trip. I owe my brother in Ann Arbor a visit and I have friends in Wisconsin and family in IN and KY. I'd like to do the tour in June but my wife thinks I'm out of my mind. If you're going to ship the bike to Chicago, make sure it is in top shape. You don't want to get stuck out in the middle of So. Dakota. The other thing is, don't worry about getting old, I turn 68 in August. You only live one.

@@jimpalmer1969 Thanks for sharing! I especially liked the Iron Butt 1000, oh my, wow, I'm impressed. My bike has 38,000. Except for rubber parts on the 35 year old bike, seals etc., most everything really looks good as I dig into it. Yes on the stator. Torn and undecided, will review again, and yes on the Ricks. I have crossed the country 3 times, from Iowa, to Grand Canyon, to La, and Seattle, and Seattle to Wyoming, all done on a old 78 CB 750 K Honda, full dress(Vetters). This Goldwing is my Dad's old bike I inherited from him. He bought it for 10,000 bucks, new off the floor, then he put 10,000 miles on it before he parked it. (A buck a mile!) So I have put on 28,000 more, but really would like to experience a cross country ride on this bike, its a cruiser for sure. Yes, I do not want to breakdown on the road. My back up plan if I do is to just throw it in a U-Haul and drive home if I can find a U-Haul at the time. Yep on the living once, working on my bucket list of things to do, still working full time though. 67 in December. Again thanks for sharing!

@@charlesfowler5791 Great another young guy! Sounds like you have a great bike. How long has it been off the road? Mine was parked for over 10 years. The brake and clutch fluids had completely dried out. The PO parked it because the starter motor died. He started to take it apart to fix it and then stopped. It looked like the years went by and he became too old for the bike. When I picked it up the nuts and bolts to put it back together were still sitting under the bike. I have had two CB750s, 1977 CB750F and a 1974 CB750K4. The 74 had a vetter fairing. I never did a lot of touring on that. HI Jim, Seems like way too much work to bleed the system. Have you given any thought to Speed Bleeders?
@jimpalmer19694 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, yes I have used speed bleeders and they do work fine. I have always found it difficult to get a new brake system bled when starting from bone dry. It made me think about how Honda does it in the factory. Also this tool makes bleeding the brakes a one man job. It really is a time saver and my brakes now are completely bled.
@michaelbriese94174 жыл бұрын
@@jimpalmer1969 Hey Jim, I have used the pressure bleeder system before on my GMC and on an old Datsun I had. It was a commercial product I bought from JC Whitney years ago. it worked quite well but really was more trouble than it was worth. I never did have to do a completely dry system and if I would have needed to it would probably have functioned perfectly. What I had used with great success in the past, prior to Speed Bleeders, was a Mity Vac brake bleeder. It too worked on new installs but I would always get air bubbles through the bleed hose past the bleed screw threads. Of course, grease around the bleeder would limit that substantially. With the Speed Bleeders they come with a thread sealant already on the threads and that works extremely well. I have added them to five different Honda motorcycles in the past few years and to the disk brake calipers on my GMC and am totally satisfied with their performance. They are the answer to the "one man brake bleeding system" in my opinion.

@@michaelbriese9417 Mike, glad it worked for you. Motorcycles present a slightly different problem than cars. The master cylinder pumps a lot less volume per stroke than a car and it must be able to pump the air out going down hill. This is one man's solution and it was a fun project to make. Enjoy your wrenching.

HI Jim. MikeB in Tacoma. Have you entertained the thought of installing an LED headlight instead of Halogen? As you know, the current draw would be significantly less than a Halogen bulb. I've gone to LED on both my GL1500 and GL1800 Gold Wings. I really like the performance of the LED's.

To: Jim Palmer, I just picked up my first 1200 goldwing" I'm going through it and noticed three wires cut that runs right over my timing covers? Can you please tell me where they go to? One is Red & one is Green and the other is Green with a red stripe.... Thank you buddy...
@jimpalmer19695 жыл бұрын
Tracy, It matters what year and model, naked, Interstate or Aspencade. They are all a little different. The green might be the thermal switch for the radiator fan. Red is usually unswitched +12v. The green with the red stripe has me stumped. There is a green/red that goes to between the starter solenoid and the start button. Depending on the model and what accessories are fitted there are bunches of variations in the wiring. I suggest going to GoldwingFacts.com and posting to that forum. There are a bunch of really smart people who really know these bikes and are really happy to help out. My handle on that forum is JamesPal. Good luck JimP
