This song was written and dedicated to his loyal wife, Sara, who divorced him because he was unfaithful to her. She stood by him and gave him four beautiful children. But he was a womanizer, so she left him. He deeply regretted her action.

Also, celebrity had already become something he could never escape, so he continued this insane career, because he had to be able to provide support and protective security for his family, whether he stayed in the business or left it. Sara wanted out of the limelight. She chose to leave Bob because he wouldn't leave his music career. Having affairs came after that, while they fought about it.

I have always loved this song… Of course written for his former wife Sara, they had children together, were married for years… Bob couldn’t be faithful but he was always good to those children and deep down he loves Sara… His weakness in cheating with other women cost him his marriage… That along with the drugs and drinking, but I believe deep down Dylan will always love Sarah to his grave. Another beautiful song written for Sara is called ‘Sad eyed Lady of the lowlands’. This entire ‘Desire album is so good! ❤️‍🩹

The ugliness of addiction wasn’t revealed. It was looked upon by many as tragic but somehow romantic for an artist to be addicted, until the truth came out.

@@Hexon66 what part of 'the mistake was mine' do you not get? However, do you think the adulation of addicts like Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Curt Cobain etc wasnt media grooming? Now the buzz is all around glorifying gender transition. It's the individuals choice to go along with it and medicate themselves, but Influencers are called that for a reason.
