The Expe / WaNoWA album called Foresight (PRYTHM 01) is a fantastic journey into some musical universe that is located halfway between High Class New Age and Spiritual Jazz. Of course those genre labels don't do justice to a music that is well beyond that. I love the very soothing sound but this is not boring New Age, it is very happening, under a curtain of seemingly "relaxing" music. Yoshitake San brings in his polyrhythm science, sense of harmony, and this alone puts it closer to "In A Silent Way" by Miles Davis, than some easily made ambient. Track #2, my favorite, is the best example of this, with subtle chord work, mesmerizing guitar harmonics, and a very clever 9/8 rhythm (that could be felt as 3+3+3 or 4+5) that smoothly morphs into some straight and very groovy 3/4 rhythm. to go back to the first pattern. All this followed perfectly by percussionist Youhei Yamaura. This is very sophisticated music for sure. The bells provide a nice and warm cocoon to Yoshitake San's personality, which is the dominant force of this album. Polyrhythms are one of the highlights of this album, predominantly under the 3,6,9 numbers, with the exception of track #3 which has a fantastic 14 beats (7+7) tabla rhythm melody, then ending in a very cute five beats tabla pattern. Actually, track #3 is the exception, as it puts the bells work more upfront, with a simple 12 strings guitar sparking the syncopated momentum for the bells to flow like honey. The "bells" are actually a “Choir Chime" , by twelve players, each striking one single handchime, in random order. Those twelve players are from the Yamato Kogen Taiyo-no-ie, a support facility for the disabled in Yamazoe Village, Nara Prefecture. What a nice idea and project ! Not to forget the velvety and curvy bansuri flute by Manabu Matsumoto, adding another heart warming and sensual dimension to this track. Foresight is a very pleasant and meaningful album that could find a place in anybody's heart, and not only ambient aficionados. Music is universal, and it sure is Yoshitake San and PRYTHM's religion !
