Hi Cole. Is this what you mean by simplicity? What you tell here in just under four minutes, others need more than fifteen minutes. This is actually what I'm looking for. And one important thing I do well in my ears, I do not take a photo, but I create a photo. Thank you for sharing this simple but valuable info.

What filter do you use. I use a polarize filter is that good for slow shutter speed captures?
@GTMcKean7 жыл бұрын
The best filter would be neutral density. Tony uses a variable ND filter which increases the amount of ND to achieve the desired shutter speed.

Personally I like a tad of lens flare, it gives the photograph 'real' look. May I ask if there was a reason live view wasn't used? Sunrise/sunset are the only times I do use it.
@markharris57718 жыл бұрын
I've just ordered my first blue/yellow polariser filter from Cokin. It appeared when you used your filter that it only affected the water and not the sky, is this right as I thought they also affected the sky.
@NotATube7 жыл бұрын
As far as I'm aware, the effect of a polariser on the sky is most obvious 90 degrees from the sun. Here he's shooting in the direction of the sun itself, which may be why the effect isn't prominent(?)

If you're just trying to maximize your depth of field, do yourself a favor: learn focus stacking and save yourself a couple grand on buying this lens.

but u need to spend the money for the computer, monitor and photoshop subscription, lol; or u can buy an iphone with that portraiture mode instead of using a full frame camera with a wide prime lens and call yourself a smart photographer as well; or is like buying a cheap car and driving it downhill with high speed and wonder y ppl are paying so much money for a sport car when u can achieve the same speed;

Purchased a second hand shift tilt lens yesterday, Canon's equivalent the TS-E 90mm and managed to get a chance to try it out today for a short time. I tried Chris's suggestion focus stacking for the first time, it doesn't work well on this lens as it focus breathes causing ghosting on the stacked images, worse on the stacks when the lens is shifted to the left or right. I'm guessing ghosting is a problem on other lenses too that focus breathe if you adjust the focus for your stacked images rather than sliding camera on a focus rail. The experiment I tried was a 3 shot pano left, center, right with 6x focus stacks for each of the 3 pano positions @ 4m, 5, 7, 10, 15 & 30m at f5.6 it's optimum aperture. I purchased this lens over a macro lens as for me I can see it being more versatile for my photography
@chrissnyder44398 жыл бұрын
Interesting. The only time I've had an issue with focus breathing is if I stacked images with content ranging from just a few inches from me all the way out to infinity. When shooting something like the stream in this video I've never had an issue with it.

I'll play around with this lens once the Xmas rush is over, just wanted to make sure it was working ok as just purchased from an online auction and wasn't packed that well, also wanted to test making panos using the lens shift function. It worked fine on my test shots with seamless stitching with camera body stationary and also shifted 11mm on a macro focus rail to correspond with the lens 11mm shift to the left and right. The stack focus pano with the body shifted matching the lens shift didn't blend well in one area with the stitch. I don't think this lens will be any good for stack focusing as just tried the photos took yesterday cutting back to three per stack 10m, 15m & 30m and checked on the middle and left shifted position, both results are still ghosting.
@andrewporfyri5597 жыл бұрын
That's not always the best way as the image in the foreground or background will physically change in size depending where you focus

How about using a lens hood ???
@Don-md6wn7 жыл бұрын
A lens hood is rarely going to help with a wide angle lens, particularly when you're shooting into the sun.

Great tips, really well presented! I'm starting out with photography and introducing reflectors / diffusion seems to be the next step, and i came to pretty much the same conclusions. Remote controller is much needed, or some experience with timer. There is a point where too much gear is too much, however this is still in bounds with reasonable photography that stays fun. Besides, carrying around a collapsed discs etc. isn't too much of a hassle. The mentality (the trend) with digital cameras seems to be, shoot, shoot, shoot and take as many pictures. Well, its all well and good in it's own right and definitely gives one good practice. But i tend to like this approach more. Right place, right time, settled to proper mood. Find the subject(s), set up the tripod, think about composition. Play with the light and shadows, capture the beautiful moment. Only to find all the preparation ruined by a seagull left-over, or that classic hovering UFO blocking the sun. Damn it! All silliness aside, this approach reminds me in some ways of the film era. You "have to" pack more punch / thought into the frame, film was limited. Maybe i'm romanticizing the whole process, maybe these are the first times i can express my experience in clearer manner. Alright, it's time to find out how shooting to a film feels...

+jerry Paul ND filters come in one stop, two stop or 3 stop increments. Variable ND filters will get darker as you rotate. They are expensive but the best option.

you make the greatest videos! I'd come to your class if u had one! I'm struggling with my settings constantly on my Canon camera, it's so frustrating ! how come with the shutter speed also makes the picture turn out dark or bright depending on what I set it on. I recently found the setting to automatically change AV ..do you think that's something good to do or should I keep trying it myself?
@MasterPhotoWorkshops8 жыл бұрын
+Gimpy newman Thanks. Your aperture needs to change along with the shutter speed to get the exposure right. If your camera has shutter priority mode, try shooting with that setting. Your aperture will close down as you slow the shutter speed down and conversely open up as you increase the shutter speed.
@gimpynewman88938 жыл бұрын
