Find the stress and pull exerted when the temperature falls to 30K if i) The ends don’t yield, ii) the ends yield by yield by 1.2 mm c. Take Young’s modulus of elasticity, E = 2 × 105 MN/m2 and α = 12 × 10-5 / K. d. Calculate the moment of inertia for L-section of dimensions 100 mm × 80 mm × 20 mm along x-x axis and y-y axis paasing through the C.G. of the section. e. Calculate the safe working load for a circular steel strut of 6m length and having diameter 80mm which is hinged at both ends. The factor of safety is 4. Take E=2.1 X 105 N/mm2 . f. A cantilever beam of 6 m span carries a u.d.l. of 4.5kN/m over the whole span. Find the maximum deflection and slope when moment of inertia, I = 2 × 108 mm4 and Young’s Modulus of elasticity, E = 2 × 105 N/mm2 .

Thank you for this demonstration on how to solve this kind of problem. I got the wrong answer on one such a problem because I didn't realize I could take the moment of a point like Joint D in a section and leave out Joint A and C in the calculation. I still don't understand fully why it is we can ignore the other points when taking the moment of a section but I get that's the way to solve it. 👍
