I'm real concerned because I'm living in Houston and I've got butterflies that are getting ready to emerge and it's going down into freezing temperatures and may even snow here. So how long can I keep the butterflies inside?

You can keep them inside for as long as the freeze lasts. They won't eat the day they emerge and then they just need nectar or juice. They love watermelon but they'll eat many others if you don't have watermelon.

What color are the males and females?

They're both orange and black. The shades of orange are a little different from individual to individual but I don't believe that males or females are darker orange or anything. The females do have thicker black lines on the wings than males and the males have that black, circular spot on the hind wing.

Thanks so much for your nice comment! I like dissecting scopes for this kind of stuff most, which generally go from 10x to about 40x. You don't need to make a slide, you can just throw something down on the stage and it gives you a whole new view of things. They're especially good for kids. I do use a compound scope here in some shots. I think it has 40x, 100x and 400x but I rarely use that top end (that's for seeing cellular structures and the like. Rarely do I use more than 100x in making these kinds of videos.

We successfully hatched a beautiful male two days ago! I was able to hold him on my hand as he dried and took flight! We have another chrysalis about to open, as well as one in the J amd two babies still eating and growing! This has been an incredible experience with my family! Thanks for the tips about thw tentacles!

Sorry to take so long to respond, I was traveling and had bad internet. You can get mesh "tents" to protect caterpillars and/or leave plants in pots and bring them inside--just be prepared to deal with the frass. I put the plants in big tubs to catch most of it. Good luck!
