1. Not leaving enough space Most musicians fill ALL the space while improvising. Leaving space creates intrigue and curoisity. It leaves the audience wanting more. Just like a pause right before a punchline can make the joke hit harder, pauses between phrases will give each phrase more meaning. 2. Trying too hard Have you ever met someone who is trying to sound cool or smart while they're talking? They usually come off really annoying. When you try to sound good your music will come off the same way. Be humble and play what you know. Don't try to impress the room and you will likely end up being more impressive 3. Not focusing on rhythm and feel Repeated notes that are super locked in will be more engaging than a million notes out of the pocket every day. Really listen to the time and only play notes that are super locked in! Make it dance! 4. Theres no shape to your solo Don't give it all away in the first measure! Take your time, leave space, play simple and sparse and you will be able to take longer solos that can really tell a story! 5. You lack intensity and passion Play your solo as if it's the last time you will ever play music. When you are tepid or scared it comes through and it doesn't matter what notes you're playing. Let your passion and personality cascade through your instrument
