Perfect place to visit and the Centennial Gardens with the family especially after Thanksgiving. I was there yesterday Saturday 11/30/24. What an awesome place, thanks for sharing!

Hi Ray, i'm gonna ask your advice about trying to revive a tiny Bonfire Patio peach tree that someone gave me. It came from a full grown tree that someone has and is about 8 inches tall. It was given to me in a tall plastic cup with dirt in it and I think it had 2 or 3 leaves on it. Anyhow I re-planted it in an average size pot with I think compost soil and the leaves fell off and it may be dead. So now I want to put it in a different pot, give the roots a good spraying before repotting it and maybe keep it in the house during this winter in TN and hope it revives next Spring. I thought i'd use standard potting mix for soil but wondering if you have any advice before I repot it? I'd like it for an ornament tree and care nothing about getting peaches. Also wondering if you have any experience with Sago Palm trees? Thanks!
@HorticultureGeek26 күн бұрын
I would say check to see if the plant has any life in it. Do the branches have any green left in them are they pliable or are they dead and dried out. If your plant has any life left then yes repot it. Overwintering it inside at this small size would work but in general it shouldn’t be inside as long as you are zone 5 or higher. I would really recommend a root stimulate such as Espoma Bio Tone during reporting to encourage the roots to grow to support the tree. Hope that helps and sorry no experience with sago.

@@HorticultureGeek Thanks much for your response! I am going to repot it (Bonfire Patio peach tree) becuz I don't know where I want to plant it yet on my property, and I also want to wait to see if its going to survive before planting it in the yard. I just thought I would keep it in the house this winter but if you recommend keeping it outside then I will. I will just ask one more question. I have packaged top soil and general Miracle Gro potting soil...would you recommend using one of those to repot it with or buy something more appropriate?
@HorticultureGeek23 күн бұрын
@ if you keep it in the house either soil is fine. If you keep it outside use the general soil. The miracle grow has fertilizer in it that will encourage the plant to try to grow and you don’t want fresh growth outside in winter to get frost damage.

Thank you so much for your video because my Boston fren was root Bon I mean it was ridiculous. I used a bread knife to cut through it to divide it and I got two plants, but I think I took off too much of the dirt around the other one so I’m gonna watch that I want to see if it catches But thank you so much for this video. It was very very helpful and I’m glad I watched it before I replanted mine.👏🏼💚🌿🪴

I actually just discussed the fountain in a recent garden tour (kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5bQXoV4lraDZrcsi=id_ZQNmPlL2G3SO-). I put it away for the winter and i periodically clean it out during the garden season maybe 2 or 3 times. I don’t have a screen for the pump but have not ever felt like I needed it. Hope that helps. Thank you for your lovely tour. I appreciate your beautiful gardens and creative artistry. You maximize your yard space and effectively allow some restful contrasts with your lawnscape amongst the beds. Your front yard beds and autumn display are so enjoyable. What an amazing shade garden & patio area! Ever try European Ginger (shade) and Butter Burr (sun)? I wonder if planting your asclepia in a tub and planting the tub in the bed would prevent it from spreading? Thank you for your welcoming, healthy perspective on gardening!
@HorticultureGeek2 ай бұрын
I have not tried ginger yet but it is on list of things I want to plant. I am not that familiar with butter bur I might need to look into it. The only thing I know is some varieties get large. Thanks for the kids words, I’m glad you enjoyed the video.
@suesci2 ай бұрын
You're very welcome. Butterbur does get invasive. I have a bed surrounded by a walkway & and driveway, so it's a good spot for it. The leaves are about 12" in diameter, which is a good contrast in my landscape.

Peach tree is year round outside in a pot???? Beautiful.
@HorticultureGeek2 ай бұрын
Yes it is. The patio or miniature varieties are wonderful. You just need to get a variety that is rated at least 2 zones lower than you to have it survive in a container. I’m a zone 7 so this peach tree is rated down to zone 5.

What is the shrub/tree with the red trumpet flowers? (About 9 minutes)
@HorticultureGeek2 ай бұрын
It’s a mandevilla. It’s a tropical plant sold as an annual in most markets. This plant is around 4 years old. I have it planted in a container and I bring it inside my heated potting shed in the winter.

Could you give approximation of fertilizer and soil for the ferns please?
@HorticultureGeek2 ай бұрын
The soil depends on the size container you use. You want fresh soil around the root ball without burying the root ball any deeper than it already was. For fertilizer you want a root stimulator not an all purpose. Ferns don’t need a lot of fertilizer in general but when diving they do benefit from a root stimulant like bio tone. Maybe use half a cup around the root ball or follow the package instructions. Hope that helps.

When is best time for dividing potted ferns? I'm in zone 7b
@HorticultureGeek2 ай бұрын
Fall or spring will work. I typically do it in the spring. You just want it to be cool enough that the plant won’t have heat stress on top of getting ripped apart but warm enough that they still have time to root in and be happy.

if you bring boston ferns in from outside do you spray them for nats and mosquitoes?

You can absolutely spray them. I typically spray with a dawn dish soap mix unless they have a visible bug infestation then I will use a chemical spray or insecticidal soap.

@HorticultureGeek3 ай бұрын
Yes it stays out in the yard in its container at all times. This particular variety can handle my winter temps. If we ever get an abnormally cold spell I throw a sheet or blanket over it.
@bethbilynskyj1623 ай бұрын
Can it be grown in a big pot?
@HorticultureGeek3 ай бұрын
Depending on your growing zone yes. The general rule of thumb is that a plant needs 2 zones of tolerance to survive in a container over winter. So this clematis is rated for zones 4 to 9 for in ground planting which means you need to be in a zone 6 or higher to safely leave outside in a container. Hope that helps.
@bethbilynskyj1623 ай бұрын
@@HorticultureGeek Thanks! I'm zone 8 so it should be okay. I hadn't known that advice about containers, but it's very helpful, not only for this clematis but for other plants I'm thinking of growing.

I use Stump and vine killer from Bonide. It’s available at most big box stores and works well. I also use a hand saw in these situations to cut the roots out of the container.

Would a larger clay pot be better for stability? Just wondering.
@HorticultureGeek5 ай бұрын
The stability is really based on the shape of the pot and how much bottom surface it has. If the pot is too heavy adding water would be a challenge. But a larger pot that is a good stable pot would work well. The size of the fountain can be whatever fits your space. Hope this helps.
