Why use the powder, when you can use stone sand and reeds? There's something fishy going on here. You can even use Sunlight to purify the water. There is probably some chemical in the powder that will harm the people long term.

The powder is probably some sulphate salt such as iron sulphate or aluminium sulphate and may contain some bleaching agent as we'll.

It is VERY easy for people to have a side and then automatically start viewing people with a different perspective negatively. The more we resist this impulse, the easier it will be to get along.
