As a teenager who recently took up crochet because of its trendiness, I think that it’s become a trend in gen Z like thrifting has, because it’s sustainable, and that sustainability is romanticized as aesthetic, which my generation loves. I think the aesthetic and fun aspect of crochet is a big part of its resurgence, though, not just sustainability. It makes people feel cute to wear a homemade granny square bandana they crocheted, while also giving people a sense of accomplishment of avoiding fast fashion.

I stopped taking Luxury ( or even High Fashion in general ) seriously when they started promoting meat dresses as luxury, And now it's like all over YT, when that's not even what I mean by Dark Minimalism.

This is such a great take on this topic!! Omg its so exhausting to watch it happen over and over again to creators I used to love, but end up not keeping up with after they've made the shift to more 'luxury' lifestyle content.

Crocheting because the clothes I can afford literally break after a few months these days so need to do something about it for myself to have clothes that I like

I started crochet two months ago and I am obsessed I cant stop even if my hands hurt, I wanted to learn it so I can make gifts for people I love and make clothes for myself and not support fast fashion brands. I already stopped purchasing from global brands like zara ana H&M for like a year, and when I need something I look for a local brand, my aunt starting a brand also helped (she designs everything and go to a tailor to sew the designs). plus being a graphics and media student I was tired of screens and needed a new hobby, crochet seemed perfect in this economy.

I think you should’ve also talk about the end of recession pop in the early/mid 2010s which was pioneered by Lorde “Royals” which was very minimal with Hiphop inspired instrumentation that influenced a lot of artists including reputation and which perfectly transitions to the late 2010s where Hiphop was at peak based from the charts. The Harry mention was kind of a reach since that wasn’t known by gp in late 2010s.

gen z crocheter here, i began crocheting in late early this year because to be honest, i struggle quite a lot with thinking of gifts to give people and it's just such a great feeling to see someone like a piece that was made with care. also started because i do quite like the idea of making clothes and i know a couple of designer friends who have their own brand and all, and crocheting helps me in fulfilling my desire to make clothes i'll wear and also being able to try patterns and giving it a bit of a personal flare.

this is the most weird video i have ever watched. crochetting is one of the artistic or brain useable tool that gen z is foreign to nowadays. i am a university student in turkey. i have only met 10 people that can do crochet whereas %99 of people i have met overuse instagram, tiktok etc.....

For me I always valued hand made things before getting into crochet I was already doing embroidery and growing up I was influenced by the diy mouvement but I decided to try crochet bc of the harry styles cardigan since i couldn't find it anywhere for me crochet is a great way to use fashion to express myself and my ideas and a great way to keep my mind focused

Crochet also provides instant gratification. On days where work or social life don’t provide a sense of accomplishment, seeing that my project grew an inch makes me feel more productive.

This isn’t even the beginning. This is a preview of what’s to come. So much great pop music out and will come in years. In America I’m so glad we’re not being forced to listen to lil baby and future anymore lol. I’m a lifelong fan of nearly all music.

To be honest, my grandma showed me how to crochet and knit. That was last year. I didn't have a reason. I was just bored.😂 Thisis summer I knitted my first pair of socks( with her help ofc). I just do it for myself and family but I find this topic very intersting and understand the struggle from people who wanna sell their stuff.

i'm a gen z and i started crocheting when i was 13/14 (in the pandemic) not because of it being popular but because i could vividly remember my grandparents crocheting and i felt like learning how to crochet would make them proud, even if they could never actually know ❤‍🩹

Tbh, I'm not so great at predicting trends - never have been - but I sure do hope this one doesn't vanish super quickly. I heard I Love It and that song voiced how I felt about it, and I've loved electropop ever since. I want Brat Summer to last forever. It's also exactly my favorite kind of dance music - the kind with lyrics that I can sing and join in on. This is better than the 2008ish music in that respect.

Fascinating! One thing I think does get left out of many crochet videos is that there tends to be a swing back and forth between various crafts, particularly knitting and crochet, in terms of which is the trendy, finding yourself, joining DIY culture one this decade. Perhaps it's more crochet and knitting right now precisely because knitting was so big in the early 00s. Who knows.

And not to be a downer, but... part of crochet's surging popularity on tiktok is that it is FAST and can be done at a pace that fits an influencer's upload schedule. Knitting has suffered similarly, with chunky sweaters that look like garbage in a week and that are often uncomfortable to wear being much more of a trend than the knits you'd actually want for your wardrobe long term. It's the appearance of slow fashion with the reality of disposable social media hype. Yeah, individual creators are living up to their sustainability ideals, but the trend overall isn't as positive, and it's not just because of huge fast fashion companies.

I think a part of why crochet became so popular during the pandemic, aside from people having time (and sometimes no money), is the meditative aspect. Meditation is good for the mental health; combine that with the positive brain chemicals you get from having made something - accomplishment, pride, compliments from friends - it may be a legitimate means of self-medicating at least somewhat against covid anxiety, uselessness depression, and lets you focus on something that's productive so you're not thinking about the world being on fire.
