If I couldn't be bothered to reseal the gear box, I would fill it with NGLI 0 or 00 grease. It is more like toothpaste or jelly and falls back onto the gears rather than being pushed away from the gears like a typical wheel bearing NGLI 2 grease.

Picked up one of these at a garage sale for 100 bucks was like new never used .I changed the oil cleaned the carburetor and it ran great tested it on some things worked fine. Mine did have a 12 volt starter button you would hook a 12 volt battery to these jumper cable things to a battery step on the dimmer switch looking thing and it would turn over and start. Pretty cool . So I didn't use it for a while and one day the power went out so I dragged it out mine also has wheels and a handle to move it around. I hooked up a extension cord plugged in my coffee maker started the engine popped right off went inside coffee maker was on and then them generator stopped. Went out in the garage to looking the connecting rod decided to go through the engine case have no idea why but was bummed. So I still have the generator with the hope of some day finding another engine. Hopefully it won't be a tecumseh. 😊

It's so sad to see the car in that condition. These Ciera International Series are actually really rare, only 1100 were made for 1988. And this was the last year the 3.8L V6 was offered. I had bought one 1988 new myself (2-door coupe, burgundy/grey two-tone) and had it until I gave it to my dad in '95, and he drove it for another 5+ years. Though I’m currently stranded with my 3.4L Trans Sport Montana, I’m here because of a Georgia couple stranded in their 3.8L Lumina APV. It was 4 days ago and they’re still there, clearly living in it with their dog. I’m not really a car guy, totally broke, in a similar situation myself, and I’m already in way over my head… but I’d like to help. I’m still recovering from my own 5 mile walk to work the day before but these people have it worse. I saw them on my lunch break and then again several 100°F hours later. I walked miles to work a day earlier, but I now had my friend’s car so I stopped to see if I could help. It’s now been several days and they have pushed the van to an O’Reilly’s Auto store. When I saw them they were trying to get a new belt on but they said the crank pulley was wobbling even before it broke. After struggling with inadequate tools, we ran out of daylight. I was thirsty but I left them with my Taco Bell drink (they needed it) and phone number in case there was anything I could help with. My situation is barely any better since my own van is broken down and I’ve been displaced by a tornado, but I had my friend’s car for the night. They texted me asking for water and a flashlight while I was already on the way back with tools and lights. I felt guilty for wasting what little daylight they had earlier. I was able to get the belt on but the harmonic balancer/crank pulley was definitely misaligned and some hard vacuum lines were broken from the old belt breaking. The battery was dead from running an inverter but I came back with a jump starter and a case of water. Of course, it still wouldn’t start and the belt was walking right off when cranking. It’s been days and suddenly they are asking for a replacement hose for the fuel regulator. I don’t even know where to start. It’s probably one of the two vacuum hoses I saw which were broken by the old belt coming loose and I expect it will happen again since the crank is the real problem. Even so, the guy seems to think he will retime it on the side of the road without removing the engine… and I already know he’s not any more mechanically inclined than I am (not at all). Wishful thinking? Any idea what happened and what it might really need based on my description? Remember: Belt broke, crank pulley/balancer are misaligned, wouldn’t start even with a charged battery.
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 22 күн бұрын
The tornado that displaced me also crushed my car and I couldn’t get another due to being co-signed on a friend’s loan. I had to go a year with no vehicle until another friend gave me the Montana… which was a blessing even though the constant breakdowns have been a nightmare… but this isn’t about me. I’m just explaining why I related to their situation with a particularly relevant experience. Unfortunately, they did not have a friend as generous as mine and they had just paid for this van days earlier. I’m barely one step removed from living in my van. My mother’s landlord sold the neighborhood to developers forcing her to leave just as I was trying to move in. She had to abandon her trailer and I had to abandon my accessory building, and since I had no place for me, I had no place for her. Thankfully, my old landlord finished rebuilding but I have to stay in my rented workshop. She’s on a waiting list with the Housing Authority for a seniors. So, yeah, as bad as it’s been for me, I think these people somehow have it much worse. Really put things into perspective and makes me appreciate what I have. I wish I could do more for them and I’m here to get direction on that.
@Turbo231

@@Turbo231 Thanks. Believe it or not, I saw they were still stranded in the parking lot at O’Reilly’s last night. Last message I got implied they could borrow the puller from O’Reilly’s if I could provide the part and a breaker bar. Of course, I’m still elbow-deep in my own van with no money for the parts to get it fixed. Yeah, they were asking for a new crank pulley with harmonic balancer. If I can get to a junk yard for my own van I’ll see if I can find one but I don’t have the puller either and I’m totally broke. I think they’re going to have to find that one on their own. :(

Very fun opening up old junkyard vans for parts. Almost nothing is ever missing when I find them. The little plastic wing nuts that hold on the headlights are worth having spares as they break. The luggage rack thumb screws are identical to the ones that hold on period GM headlights, typically on Buicks. Too bad she ended up there as she looked like a super winter beater for someone. That rear heat package and cruise control make good sense for Alberta. Are crank windows more reliable in extreme cold climates?

Those windows might be, but I haven't had any issues with my electric ones over the years. Your parts van is pretty good underneath, so she might deserve another chance to serve. The crossover parts you already have in stock are handy. Does your Pontiac van have the same manual mirrors verses the power ones? Is it worth it to have both sets? I’ve never seen manual mirrors here in Central Texas boneyards. I think my dad cut and pasted all of the ones sold here with L27 and rear air, but the Austin van was different.
@Turbo231
@Turbo231 Ай бұрын
@@ryanfoster9863 Actually, it doesn’t. The Pontiac has that manual remote driver’s mirror but also has the passenger manual remote mirror. This van had no passenger control, aka you have to roll the window down. I wonder if that’s a slow decline of option quality as the van series got older as my Pontiac is pretty base.
