@FastFlyingVirginian14 күн бұрын
Good point, even if it isn't I know it was probably the last time I ever saw one in regular service. It's got me thinking, I haven't really seen the last run dates for Amtrak's diesels discussed in any detail.
@usstiger_cd416527 күн бұрын
was the diesel used for the climb up to horseshoe curve?
@FastFlyingVirginian26 күн бұрын
To conserve coal and help with braking as necessary. The story I've heard is that the CEO of Norfolk Southern was in the cab that day and asked that the diesel be throttled back for at least some of the distance so the 765 could do more of the work and thus make more noise. I'm not sure how much that's true, but I sure didn't pick up the sound of the diesel on the approach to the Curve. 😃

I know this is a few years old but you usually don’t see 2017 over that way much. Usually the SWs handle the work over there.
@FastFlyingVirginian29 күн бұрын
I'd like to see more of the SWs in action. Closest I've come so far was seeing one slip past the station in Lewistown, working on the Juniata Valley several years ago. I wasn't in a position to set up the camera, so I had to settle for a distant glimpse of it from the station platform.

@FastFlyingVirginian2 ай бұрын
I'm a longtime user of Vegas Pro, and before that Vegas Platinum. They were originally Sony products that were spun off to Magix (along with the entire development team) several years ago. Platinum is the lesser-by-a-small-degree 'home' version, but there is a discounted upgrade path to Pro if you ever find Platinum limiting. I highly recommend either to anyone looking for a more powerful video editor.

Back when they faced the horns the correct direction instead of today's way of facing them backwards. They sound choked out today, not warm and rich at all.
@FastFlyingVirginian2 ай бұрын
I'll have to look at some recent footage, but I was under the impression that nearly all horn racks had one or two facing rearwards, or at least whatever's considered rearwards depending on the locomotive they're mounted to. I totally agree on the present-day quality - aren't most button-activated these days anyway, so there's no room for quilling or any sort of finesse?

Do you know if the tunnels had damage from Helene or videos from the loops.
@FastFlyingVirginian2 ай бұрын
I have not seen pictures of the segment between Old Fort and Ridgecrest yet, only the official statement from NS on restoring service that says they are still evaluating the damage. It's been a while since I've seen any news on it though, so the situation very likely has changed. I am impressed they are trying to restore service on any part of the S-Line at all, given that shortly after I recorded this they ended through train service and downgraded the whole line to 25 mph.

i was hoping we get details about these cars like capacity length etc. not just video of them going by
@FastFlyingVirginian2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the input. At the time I made this 12 years ago, I had noticed comments on other, more fully-produced videos along the lines of "Stop talking over the video/I don't want to read a book, just show the train!", and I told myself that was the niche I was aiming for. I suppose this is the other extreme, and somewhere in between is the balance. Perhaps this is the excuse I need to do a re-release.

Made in Germany Red and Blue
@FastFlyingVirginian2 ай бұрын
The red one was built in Germany, you could still see 'Krupp' stenciled on the side. I believe the blue one was built at Kasgro's facility on the outskirts of Pittsburgh, PA though. I found a local news article dated a few months prior to when I saw the cars; the article was accompanied by a photo of the car under construction and stated its maiden run was expected that August. I think that is what I saw here.

Yes, and a great weekend overall. I tried to get back to Benny (on the last day I think), but not knowing where to turn walking back I overshot and wasted so much time getting back that I gave up trying to get there and settled for a shot from the overlook in Tunnelhill. I think it was later that summer or the year after when I finally made it to Benny; it's been one of my go-to locations ever since.
