At the 6 min mark. I believe that is a shaft protector that would have been used with a single horse harness. The wooden shafts on either side of the horse had them and they protect the wood when it's on the ground.

The bullet case with a U stood for Union metallic cartridge or UMC if I remember right. Made or owned by the Remington company.
