Someone should add a verse and it could be the new Irish National Anthem.

It was the end of a civilization that was already old when Rome fell. The mood was like Byzantium in 1452. The dignity of a people and civilization is how they face their end. Aodh rua o Donnell was our Constantine going down before the Turk's at Constantinople. They poisoned him like a dog and stabbed the Ui Sullivan to death in Madrid as he left mass. They destroyed our civilization , occupied us for centuries reduced us to illiteracy , gave us potatoes to live on because they believed them to be deadly night shade. They hunted priests like they were vermin , desecrated the churches and monasteries, trampled on the holy relics of saints , burned the staff of Saint Patrick in Dublin. Banned the language and mistreated the people. They almost succeeded but Pearce was right in the end, they had left us our dead and while Ireland hold's these graves Ireland unfree shall never be at peace. O Donnell Abu! An la bua linn! Erinn go bragh! Russ go bragh!

Kind of meaningless now, given the demographic changes going on in England and Ireland at the moment, don't you think. It'll be "Muhammad abu" in another generation. And the term "Sassenach" a historical curiosity. If Irish Gaelic even exists then. LOL.

Proudly the note of the trumpet is sounding Loudly the war cries arise on the gale Fleetly the steed by Lough Swilly is bounding To join the thick squadrons in Saimear's green vale On, every mountaineer, strangers to flight and fear Rush to the standard of dauntless Red Hugh Bonnaught and gallowglass throng from each mountain pass On, for old Erin, "O'Donnell Abú!" Princely O'Neill to our side is advancing With many a chieftain and warrior clan A thousand proud steeds in his vanguard are prancing 'Neath borderers brave from the banks of the Bann Many a heart shall quail under its coat of mail Deeply the merciless foeman shall rue When on his ear shall ring, borne on the breeze's wing Tyrconnell's dread war cry "O'Donnell Abú!" Sacred the cause that Clan Connell's defending The altars we kneel at the homes of our sires Ruthless the ruin the foe is extending Midnight is red with the plunderer's fires On with O'Donnell, then, fight the old fight again Sons of Tyrconnell are valiant and true Make the false Saxon feel Erin's avenging steel Strike for your country, "O'Donnell Abú!" On, every mountaineer, strangers to flight and fear Rush to the standard of dauntless Red Hugh Bonnaught and gallowglass throng from each mountain pass On, for old Erin, "O'Donnell Abú!"

the true irish national anthem
@dettoladdict3 ай бұрын
I mean it is a good song but objectively amhrán na bhfiann is infinitely more relevant to the political lineage of the irish state. This is a donegal song of the 9 years war
@dettoladdict3 ай бұрын
saw someone say this of god save ireland too and im just like, this is a less relevant and imo less impactful expression of the sentiments the actual national anthem already expresses. The only good argument ive ever seen for changing it is appeasement of unionists under a UI

Without music , Ireland will never be understand : let's all respect individuals as unique to survive. But always respect and still challenge unreconstructed passion!
