I got a book in 1990 called From IdeaTo Essay. It has a small write-up by Beryl Merkham called Na Kupa Hati, Mazuri. Every couple of years. I pick up the book and read the story again to get "humbled" by Beryl's style. The delivery above by Ms. Plunkett brought the words of West With The Night to life. It is great to be part of a humanity that has people like Merkham writing and Plunkett reading for us. Humbled.

After he did this reading, he went home and turned on MSNBC and read the NYT to find out what he should think and how bad those people are that don’t follow their marching orders. Of course the same can be said of the right. But at least the right is open and honest with often disturbing beliefs. On the left they promise you everything and give you nothing.

Accounting is a call. Everyone sees the writing on the wall. Others read debits and credits.

Maude's voice is magical. I heard her for the first time in my life in 2008 and since that have been dreaming of her solo studio albums...I cannot understand how it isn't obvious for other people what a gem she is

“The true freedom, ... can blossom only with the realm of necessity as its basis.” “The realm of freedom actually begins only where labor which is determined by necessity and mundane considerations ceases; thus, in the very nature of things it lies beyond the sphere of actual material production. Just as the savage must wrestle with Nature to satisfy his wants, to maintain and reproduce life, so must civilized man, and he must do so in all social formations and under all possible modes of production. With his development this realm of physical necessity expands as a result of his wants; but, at the same time, the forces of production which satisfy these wants also increase. Freedom in this field can only consist in socialized man, the associated producers, rationally regulating their interchange with Nature, bringing it under their common control, instead of being ruled by it as by the blind forces of Nature; and achieving this with the least expenditure of energy and under conditions most favorable to, and worthy of, their human nature. But it nonetheless still remains a realm of necessity. Beyond it begins that development of human energy, which is an end in itself, the true realm of freedom, which, however, can blossom forth only with this realm of necessity as its basis. The shortening of the working-day is its basic prerequisite.” Karl Marx, Capital: Volume 3, Ch. 48: The Trinity Formula

Looking back at this, Nixon may have said many vulgarities on his tapes but he never talked to his daughters the same way Baldwin did to his.

I had an African American co-worker that was well versed in the educational system of this country. He in fact was a school board member in the Alexandria County school system. He confided to me that it was found that educational outcomes were better when there was a less diverse mix out students. What is unquestionably true is that the more elite one becomes, the more socialist their politics become. There is no better example of that is the fact of wokeness being projected by the heads of corporations and elite universities. We no longer live in a constitutional government but a corporate kleptocracy. We are approaching a hierarchy resembling something of the Patricians of ancient Rome.

It's always a pleasant experience to watch a performance by a person who actually knows how to sing. Maude is totally in touch with the song, and her audience, throughout. The informalities during the break add an extra dimension to her empathetic performance. She is an American treasure!
