I remember the SWOTL GROUP on Prodigy and sharing custom planes and files on BBS;s. And there was SWManager where you could change planes through a menu interface

Played this 30 years ago and remembering this after watching Masters of the Air.

I wish we could get a decent remake of this one, with subtle quality-of-life improvements but that stays as close to the original as possible.

I think that I never landed with the Stuka after a bombing mission, the English fighters always ended up shooting me down😄

Which is worse in flight model, aces over europe, chuck yeagers or this game? playing the game now. how accurate are the flight models? I noticed p47 is less docile than other games and not as durable. p38 seems a little more than it should be. p51 seems way to docile. How bad is the speed bleed on some of the planes? I am also not seeing some of the mid-altitude craft, like fw doing worse at altitude, though p47 does better there than low.

The best thing about SWOTL, BOB, AOE, AOTP, and EAW etc Are the dynamic campaigns and the role playing aspects like getting promotions, medals and such. IL2 would be the only sim today that has at least some of these features. DCS etc are more single mission type deals not full on wars. Larry Holland, Microprose and other early flight sim devs made much more immersive flight sims that are sadly not done anymore. All we have nowadays are either toxic filled PVP FPS's or MMO's and tons of 3rd person games. Consoles ruined the the days of the 1st person simulators if not for DCS, IL2, Steel Beasts Pro, ARMA, XPlane, MSFS and a few small developers. There would be no sims left. 3rd person cosmetics ruined gaming now everything is microtractions for stupid trinkets, skins, weapons and other worthless stuff that you can only see in 3rd person. Pardon the rant.

This is the game. Played it for hours back in the day. Had a competition with a friend to see who could win first, both as the Brits and then as the Germans. This video brought back a ton of memories. There is a trick when flying a plane with a tail gunner: fly just feet off the water or land and wait until the enemy gets close enough, then shoot. 9 times out of 10 the enemy will dive straight into the water or land. I used this trick when I was shot up pretty bad and couldn't escape without a fight, or when I was out of front-sight ammo. The next best game I've found that is even better than this is Aces of the Pacific. That game is like playing a comic book...great graphics and tons of fun. I still have this game and should get around to playing it for old time's sake.

When I was a young fella I absolutely loved this game. All you needed was a PC compatible joystick, some computer speakers and a bit of imagination and you were there in the cockpit. Graphics aside it was a very playable game and in my opinion years ahead of its time. Cheers for the memories

I preferred the original version.
