I see a lot of people saying Damon is hard to deal with, but I think some people are just sensitive and don’t know how to deal with someone who is naturally abrasive. I work with a guy who is very direct and loud, and he seems to upset people wherever we go, but he’s actually a nice guy. It’s really easy to misinterpret people on a first impression, and some people just require a little more work and patience. Especially when it’s someone who is used to being rallied around and catered to. Also, American Don is one of the greatest albums of all time, and whether sooner or later, it will eventually be recognized as such. Some academic somewhere, or some critic will eventually write a piece or paper on it, and it will take hold and people will realize what they’ve been overlooking. It’s truly a one of a kind technical accomplishment, that for me, stands up to almost infinite repeated listening. At about four minutes in, when the bass comes in on Haven’t Lived Afro Pop…it’s for me unparalleled musical moment as the tessellation of guitar is joined and slowly overtaken by the forceful groove of the bass…it’s like a semi suddenly finding the nitrous and passing a ferrari. And there are so many moments like that on the album. I could go on forever about the album.

Mudvayne is great! Especially their “King of Pain” cover which is FARRRR better then the Police’s version (the heavier tones are just more fitting). Happy, Dig, Fucking Determined, World so cold, Scarlet letters, forget to remember. I mean it’s baffling to me that anyone would consider them bad. Great stuff that I have been bumping for years now

Damn, missed opportunity not asking about their philosophy when Stin mentioned their meeting with the guy who mixed it. Would be curious to hear what they’d say

I'm just getting to this gem of an interview now. I like what Eugene said about recording a record that sounds like the band does playing live (when he referenced Albini). It's disappointing when a recording of a band I love live sounds too different from that, particularly on vocals. I'm looking forward to seeing/hearing them when they do shows on this "hemisphere".

Alec is amazing and I was (and still am) a huge fan of The Warmers. Their S/T LP is one of Dischord’s overlooked masterpieces (and I’m grateful I still have it on vinyl). I actually learned how to play the entire album on guitar in my dorm room in 1996-1997; it was easy once I figured out he used an open D tuning. Those are some of my favorite guitar parts because they’re so minimal and creative. You were right that Amy Farina’s drums were the main attraction (and pretty much the lead instrument), but Juan and Alec’s guitars and vocals were so thoughtful, interesting, and exciting.

Amazing interview. Thank you! Guy is one of my very few heroes. This is something I’ve been wanting since high school in the early-to-mid-90’s when I first discovered Fugazi and Guy. “Latin Roots” was my favorite song so it’s amazing to hear its meaning from the horse’s mouth. The entire Steady Diet discussion was priceless, but I wish you also asked him about “Exit Only” since that one has his most enigmatic lyrics from that album. “Runaway Return” is another favorite, but it’s an easy enough one to parse.
