One of the greatest things ever painted imho. So much symbolism. The two halfs may also represent how believers and his deniers will see him on the day of judgement. The viewers left side mirrored: He is blessing with both hands with a kind face. The viewers right side mirrored: He is judging by the gospels with both hands with a stern face.

It might be me, but I have the feeling you're overinterpreting this painting way too much. Albrecht Dürer was an extremely gifted artist who was aware of his value and hated the way artists were looked down upon in Germany, compared to how they were treated in Italy. He was also a very handsome devil who knew that too: he made several self-portraits to illustrate the evolution of his looks, with the last one emphasizing on his declining health. The first portrait illustrates his youth; the second his top years, the third (the one you're talking of) his serious maturity, and the last, of course, his sick body losing all its good looks.

It’s a valid point that paintings, especially from the renaissance, can be “over interrupted” looking for hidden messages that may or may not be in the painter’s mind! Perhaps I was influenced by an impressive New York Times interpretation which is definitely worth a look! www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/09/25/arts/durer-self-portrait.html

Such a fascinating work. His Christ-like gaze is genuinely enthralling. Moving forward, I'm adopting Moritz Thausing's belief that every depiction of Christ is influenced by Durer's self-portrait 1500. On a personal note, after watching your video, I realized that I've seen Durer's 2 other self-portraits in person - one at Louvre and the other at del Prado. And now, next time I'm in Munich, I'll definitely visit Alte Pinakothek to admire this extraordinary piece of art live. Thank you for educating me.

Exactly matches Shroud from 6th century. This is the real Lord Jesus Christ . Part of His face is human n other part divine.
@BaikalTii2 жыл бұрын
the dual nature of Christ, fully human and fully divine, is NOT an early teaching. it was only confirmed at Chalcedon in 451. that's beside the point, however. the duality of Christ shown in this icon is of the stern Judge who will separate the sheep from the goats and of our merciful Savior who loves the repentant sinner.

Don't believe in visions. 99.99% of them are demons trying to deceive you. Reject them with humbleness, God won't take offence and there will be other ways He will send his message to you if that is the case.

The two half images are in reference to his hypostasis. The left is the man Jesus Christ. The right is the God Jesus Christ and how he will appear at the last judgement. This is not only a belief of the early church but is still held by nearly all apostolic and orthodox (little O) Christians today.

I assure you, people who went to be martyres had reasons far more important than having no TV at home... as did the people who painted the icons, and those who built up the Church.
@pawelwysocki15814 жыл бұрын
Then again, I interpreted your statement in an unfair way, when in fact you make an interesting observation. The icons were indeed impressive to the people who lived then and there. But the comments section has nonetheless people expressing their deepest admiration for it today, centuries and centuries later. In fact, many of the Christian temples are as much a source of deepest aesthetic and spiritual experiences today as they were back then - other places don't seem to be visited for that reason alone and it somehow seems to me the effect cannot be replicated if you divorce a place from that theological context.

There are NO "two necks". The Pantocrator images are derived from the Shroud of Turin [SOT], wherein the SOT visage, imprinted on said cloth at the time of Christ's burial, reflects the brutalities of torture and etc, i.e., the PHYSICAL DISTORTION particular to the left side of his face. The Pantocrator images are offered as proof that the SOT was in existence, AT LEAST, since the time of rendering of such likenesses, and, PROBABLY, since the 1st century. IOW: this appearance is NOT a clever artistic interpretation.
@positivethoughts86335 жыл бұрын
Is there an explanation for those signs or face shapes on their necks?
@johnk24523 жыл бұрын
Those signs or face shapes on the neck are BS. Pantocrator visage renderings were derived via direct observation, and, emulation, of the Shroud of Turin [SOT] image characteristics. There are SEVERAL such SOT characteristics seen in ALL Pantocrator images: e.g., before Pantocrator images, Christ images were of decidedly ROMAN characteristics; particularly with a symmetrical shaven face and short hair; quite different from the traditional Jew of his times ... and, as seen clearly in the SOT image. The reasons for the clear asymmetrical contrast between the right and left sides of the face are the bruisings, swellings, and, etc that are observed directly in the SOT; where such, in turn, were the result of Christ's brutal torture and crucifixion.

@@johnk2452 There is no proof or even indication that this Icon was based on the Shroud, nor even proof that Byzantines had the shroud. We have proof of Byzantines possessing other sacred objects like The Hand of Saint John and many peaces of the Cross, but no mention of the shroud. If anything i want to say the shroud was based on Orthodox Iconography. Thats right. It is a catholic forgery.

Then each person will be accountable for every thought word and action of their life. People understood then were much more Holy.
