Its not a common but a lot of families in the country side of the Philippines have these blades as family heirlooms, I myself had several passed down to me from my ancestors, a pinuti, ginunting, karamabit, panay tenegre, talibong, and a kampilan. About two thirds of these where used in during the Spanish revolution and the second world war. The blades have a distinct clan engravings of my family in the guards, hilts and the scabbards, also the hilts are made of carabao horn and the scabbards are made out of kamagong wood. Same as the tradition of Ghurkas to the khukri, the blades should taste blood whenever it is pulled out and here I am with multiple scars on my palms.

Hi John, I enjoyed your interview, and especially for your more recent appreciation for Blackthorn Walking Sticks/ EDC Self Defense Tools. 🙂 Similar to you, I have accumulated many also, but I think I had a head start on you because I've been a bit addicted for over 12 years or so. My preference is for a natural bark finish, although I do own a few with black coatings (paint usually), but some of them (antique examples), got that dark finish the original way of placing them high up in a chimney to help speed the drying process. Most made today with a black finish are simply painted on, to mimic the older sticks from chimney treatments. The funny thing is, several of my most beautiful natural bark finished Blackthorn have been purchased having been painted on black along the shaft, and after careful and time-consuming stripping with a paint remover, rinsing and drying over several days, and applying 7-12 coats of an oil finish such as boiled linseed oil or tung oil,... feel wonderful in the hand and look amazing! I even have a few crook-style Blackthorn "canes", which you don't see too often because of the nature of the wood. Being very dense with close grain structure, they tend to crack putting a traditionally pronounced "crook" onto them more than oak and hickory, or other hardwoods more commonly available in the USA and bent into crook canes. Oh,... one important point I wanted to mention is regarding your application of key techniques from a variety of martial arts styles. (Starting @14:52 ... to about a minute later ) You may already know this but others may not; you are in very good company, my friend! Bruce Lee did just that himself, picking out exceptionally "effective" techniques from many differing traditional martial art styles. He didn't care about maintaining a specific style, ONLY that he could win as quickly as possible because he wasn't a big man physically. So he had to get-er-done and concentrated on what worked the best for him. Trial and error experimentation, along with grueling training routines and practice,... he gleaned the BEST from many MA styles. Not much to argue with there, in the reality of TCOB in the streets. Cheers, Joseph Tousignant Ti Rod Tactical

From what he says I can hear many similarities with JKD and AIkido the idea of fencing being used to understand body mechanics from a distance is similar to using the bokken and jo in AIkido , that's exactly it's purpose. Very interesting thank you for doing this

Paul Maslak author of scientific fighting explained it this way in how to choose your art 1)shorter stronger/ offensive infighting/jammer 2)Taller stronger/offensive outfighting/ sharpshooter 3)taller weaker/defensive outfighting /runner 4)smaller weaker/defensive infighting/counter fighter And I would say 1)Tiger.2)Leopard.3)Crane.4)Snake Physically Equal - 5)Dragon

@@walterevans2118 I thought Tommy was certified by Ted Wong? Even thought he’s got plenty of experience with many other Bruce’s students so I guess that doesn’t actually matter
@walterevans2118
@walterevans2118 2 жыл бұрын
@@axelstone3131 Yes, I believe he was . But Tommy got disillusioned with that because there were other JKD practitioners who Ted certified who simply were not up to a standard & fitness that would give the title any legitimate meaning to him.....Tommy interacted with a number of people who were Bruce's students. One was Ted himself of course. Another was the great Howard Williams who's power was immense. Howard trained with Bruce when he was in his teens. But the person who REALLY influenced & galvanized Tommy beyond all the Cert stuff & told him to just go for broke & set his OWN standard was JESSE.(Jesse Glover) Now I know Leo didn't rate Jesse (bless him, God rest his Soul) because he left Bruce's group very early in the early 1960s ...There is a lot of controversy here which confuses me a lot to be honest but there are two things - One is Jesse was very powerful with his physical strength in Judo which transferred to his striking power , and two Jesse understood SIMPLICITY .....(Although he wasn't around Bruce a lot at the time Bruce started applying it RADICALLY after 1967) ....What Tommy said to us on his FB page was that he was showing Jesse all these skillful complex fast combination punches which Ted might have shown Tommy & Jesse just extended his single right arm out showing a Single fingerjab shot. & Jesse said to Tommy - 'THIS cuts thru it all'.....Jesse saw that Tommy had Bruce's build, size, weight, height, natural power, speed, sudden-ness , & ability to read quickly so Jesse said - 'To be honest Tommy, these people are intermediaries between YOU and BRUCE .....To carry Bruce's experiment of fencing with the hands & feet forwards it would be better for you not to rely on any other instructors (even ones who trained with Bruce ) because they are still all hung up on his complex cast offs. You need to 'TAKE THE WHEEL OF THE VEHICLE YOURSELF....& with your OWN insights & hard Training start DRIVING the JKD vehicle FORWARD as FAR and as HARD as you can yourself.' ..I think Jesse gave him GOOD advice actually.

@walterevans2118
@walterevans2118 2 жыл бұрын
John Sheehan ....'What would Tommy know about JKD' ? ,,,Well, lets see 🤔 How about applying its economic principles to facets of the Art no one else has thought of applying them to ? ....Regularly inventing new drills to refine body mechanic components, Improving direction of force in students,,,setting up new training methods to get students to see fast,,,, improving different tools at different ranges, Applying weapons training methods to open hand JKD to see the target quickly ,,,Inventing tinted eye shields to get students to react more quickly to LESS visual sense data....Apart from all THIS John, what does Tommy really know about JKD ??🤔🤨(or as Monty Python put it ...What have the Romans ever done for us ' Speech ) You're being as daft as a brush. Over a piece of cert paper without understanding the content of the Art.... Its like asking ' What would Edward Van Halen have known about PLAYING the GUITAR' ??? 🤔 Ooooo he didn't get a cert from 'the Royal College of music did he' ? ...Yet he still changed the guitar world. 🙄...Same with HENDRIX.

@@robertmedsker5305 Jesse was Tommy's best friend. Jesse saw that because Tommy had the natural abilities , power & reflexes which Bruce had & that he was the same size & build it meant that Tommy was the perfect person to continue with further developing this JKD experiment of fencing with the hands and feet. I know because I watched this also with his students for over 6 years.

Nice interview ....Hope you are doing well Tommy...Hope all things go good for you.....No hard feelings ok......What can I say ? THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU TAUGHT ME IN JKD......Good luck in your efforts to preserve Bruce's Art....You once described on your page both you & me as two of 'the few' as with the R.A.F in 1940 who despite small numbers fought on to win. Despite the odds. That is the mindset & the road which must be taken with JKD....In the words of Churchill we must take a stand and march on regardless to victory,,however long and hard the road may be..... so we can march on to the broad sunlit uplands where the new dawn breaks and lights up the land. Take care Squadron Leader.

Sorry, but did he actually answer the question? How many Tuhons are there in the system and are they not capable of passing on the majority of techniques in the system? He is after all the one who promoted them to these positions. Some may have learned at different progressions of the art/system and have a varied perspective on their teaching methodologies based on what they received from their time in training with him. What exactly are they stealing?
