TP: One other thing, which is about the tune we’ll send you off with. Every time you’d hear Barry Harris, he’d stand up at the piano and start playing this very lovely Latinish vamp, which is “Nascimento.” The origin of “Nascimento.” HARRIS: Don’t ask me, man. No, what it is, tunes just come. You don’t know how they come. You don’t know how a melody comes. See, it’s not chords that come; it’s melodies that come. And this is one of those melodies that came. I named it after a little drummer from Brazil who played the tall drum with a mallet. He was playing with Sun Ra’s band. I never even heard anybody play this kind of drum. I named for him. Most people think I named it for Milton Nascimento. He was a nice little cat. Couldn’t even speak English. It just comes.

it should be a standard. I'm pretty sure this is very Harris most educational song out there. It really truly outlines a lot including the diminished connection and rhythm.

Thank goodness for these kinds of uploads.... Barry came through an era of truly exceptional artistry. We don't know if we will ever see that kind of art again. It is truly a treat to be able to hear him .......

@wojongrb Changed my loudspeakers - the kid sounds like Cannonball for phrasing right at the top of his solo...and it lasts. Drums sound fine. Plus the young man has a deep tone, proper mic technique - Sonny of course just uses mics as a pass-by, for emphasis.

Ben Herman i just checked the flow from mr fortune to you, from the next room, as it were - and right after I confirmed Mr Fortune's crazy elite and accurate notions of what Coltrane fans might like/deserve/need to hear (as he addresses the RE 20 mike, it gets sick right there), after tht dear sir I noticed: you killed - smoked - wailed - and seemed to echo the mentor - the more I think about this the sweeter it gets.

i'm sorry but I have been throughly illed by the Sonny construction right here. The kid is as good as any I've ever heard, and Sonny just comes from the nest planet - an other-worldy authority - with eternity's breath

This is absolutely insane.. Sonny is the baddest, I bet his bandleaders Buddy Rich & Elvin Jones thought so. and if betty carter annd ahmad jamal agreed. i'd rest my case. The solo on Nica's Dream from Rich/ Tuff Dude Live CD is mad mad mad

If you want simple backbeats, listen to pop music. (Nothing inherently wrong with that) but this is complex, fast, swinging jazz, and Tain is my favorite drummer on earth, one of the best songwriters in jazz, and a slammin' swinging mother. This is not a good recording. Listen to the original on Tain's CD "Detained at the Blue Note."
