Fantastic to see this I went and bought a coupe Quattro after this event.

Had a walk round Bellahouston Park on my way back from Tour Of Mull and it hasn't changed much. The only major change was there are now metal benches set into the wall on the inside hairpin towards what was the end of the stage. Also visitied Rest & Be Thankful and that again is very much the same as when it was last used in competition for a stage rally.

OPEL VAUXHALL MANTAS WERE MYTHICAL CARS.EVEN WITH THE SIERRAS AND AUDIS 4WHELL DRIVE... THEY DIDNT CARE ABOUT IT. The engines were literally bullet proff and very heavy.

The early days of group B and the cars are visably slower than what they went on to become in 85 and 86, but the problems with spectators was evident in some of the footage here; however this was left up to local organizers to deal with, or ignore...

I aways enjoyed this era in rallying. We came out of the mighty group B times into the group A with lots of different makes and models mixing it, but then the Sierra cosworth started to rule the roost in most rallies. I think I was spoilt. I saw rallying in the late 60s, all through the 70s, 80s and 90s and some of the 2000s. Today I just go out and watch historic rallying. Its just nice to see these old cars being rallied at full chat and sideways.

Fuel tanks under the occupants, special "fluid" in the tubular frames,etc...

the missing thing in today's ford,citroen and mini is that they did not build a 4wd car that looks similar to the rally car that they are using inWRC

If Makinen is still in WRC,Loeb will have a hard time winning rallies

Imagine where it ( Group B ) could have led if it had been allowed to carry on for another five years, or so.

And also, it's not like Audi couldn't build a lighter, mid engined car if they had wished to. They just wanted their car to be faithful to it's road going counterpart. I'm sure if Group B had continued for several more years that Audi would've eventually turned up with something specifically designed, from scratch, to compete in Group B. IE, a small, light, mid-engined Audi.

Thus it was better than it's competition at the time that it dominated. The cars that eventually overtook it, only did so in response to it. The Quattro was the reason that the later cars were so good.

@Mast3rSkillz Very incorrect.. The Quattro was very front heavy because the engine was over the front axle.. The only reason it won so manny rallies and dominated was because it was the first 4WD rally car racing against RWD cars. The advantage it had was huge...

I can remember this! I have them all on VHS in the house under the stairs! Must be over 100 hours of 80s rally's! lol

@DragonSukhoi that's a joke and u know it. Lancers are ok cars don't get me wrong but subaru has ruled wrc and rally car in genaral for a long time. Before subaru ruled wrc it was audi. Lancers are just the other cars. A base model wrx in better than a evo with enough work. A base model lancer is........crap a evo is a cool turbo awd car but subaru is a gift from the gods my friend.
