Superb times for motorsport and the fans (Globally). I love it all, something i grew up watching on the tv when i was a young kid in the 1970`s-early 80`s.

Had a walk round Bellahouston Park on my way back from Tour Of Mull and it hasn't changed much. The only major change was there are now metal benches set into the wall on the inside hairpin towards what was the end of the stage. Also visitied Rest & Be Thankful and that again is very much the same as when it was last used in competition for a stage rally.

Nice bit of film from a classic 'Monte'. The 'Works' Ascona 400s look really cool in Rothmans colours.(p.s. interesting to see that idiot spectators weren't only confined to Portugal or Italy....)

If only Opel would have Turbocharged the Manta 400, the car would have been a serious threat to the Audis and Peugeots. In my estimation, even without four wheel drive, a Turbocharged Manta 400 would have won the 1984 World Rally Championship for Manufacturers.

OPEL VAUXHALL MANTAS WERE MYTHICAL CARS.EVEN WITH THE SIERRAS AND AUDIS 4WHELL DRIVE... THEY DIDNT CARE ABOUT IT. The engines were literally bullet proff and very heavy.

The early days of group B and the cars are visably slower than what they went on to become in 85 and 86, but the problems with spectators was evident in some of the footage here; however this was left up to local organizers to deal with, or ignore...

I aways enjoyed this era in rallying. We came out of the mighty group B times into the group A with lots of different makes and models mixing it, but then the Sierra cosworth started to rule the roost in most rallies. I think I was spoilt. I saw rallying in the late 60s, all through the 70s, 80s and 90s and some of the 2000s. Today I just go out and watch historic rallying. Its just nice to see these old cars being rallied at full chat and sideways.

Steve Rider mentioned that it wasn't a pace note rally and that the co-drivers were given a road boo so the co-drivers were being paid for saying next to nothing!

I co drove this event, and notes were not allowed on UK events at that time. It was actually an advantage for us British co drivers because we often did map only "blind" rallies, unlike the mainland European guys. The British 1/25000 maps were (and still are) very detailed, and a decent co driver could provide lots of information to the driver.

I'm a manta-driver also. I've had 6 of them. None of which original 400's though. But my absolute favorite Rally car is actually the Escort mk1 and mk2. The way these little bombs wrap themselves round a corner is fenomenal. And the sound that the engines make when they scream. I know they aren't Group B cars, but in all honesty mantas also should not have been. Mantas didn't have 4wd, no turbo's or superchargers. In fact they were normal aspirated rally cars such as the Escorts and the Asconas.

In retrospect, 1983 was a very interesting time in that 4.w.d. wasn't so developed that 2.w.d. was hopelessly out-classed. You could still relate the handling of the top cars to the problems you faced yourself in your road car. Current rally cars are so sophisticated they are not relevant to everyday driving. I'd like to see a return to 2.w.d. based on production of 1000 examples. Be great if manufacturers then brought out some r.w.d. cars for us as they did for Group A (M3, Sierra Cosworth...)
