It actually sounds great singing many of the english compsitions. The problem is that Tongan hymn singing has fewer musical modes in practice. But you have the point when the church music department got rid of the tu'ungafasi notation hymn books. It robbed Tongans of the ability to be literate in LDS music. There have been several generations now with only the dot notation hymnal. Would bringing back a tu'ungafasi hymnal be benficial? Maybe, byt maybe not.

Tonga was no longer an empire; like other empires before it already collapsed by the time Cook arrived. More so Tupou defeated the Tuitonga, whose dynasty started the empire. The word tatau also occurs in the Samoan and Tahitian languages. You have a point about Mariner’s account, but how well did he understand Tongan culture? He might’ve misinterpreted words and actions of the people at some point as he was looking at them from a European perspective.

Mahoa'a is also referred to the processing of the cassava plant and baked for cakes, or to'okutu. This is a common staple, during droughts and famines, cassava is buried for months until required and then dug up and processed for cakes.

Your Channel is 🔥 Toks, i just found out about it this morning and started watching some of your Videos. I’m Hawaiian, and in the Hawaiian Language we have the word “Malo”, which means “Loincloth”, and Tongan’s have “Malo aupito” or “Malo e lelei.” Hawaiian’s we have the word “Mele”, which means “Song”, and Tongan’s have the same word in your Language, but you guys use it for a Name for the Women. Us Hawaiian’s have the word “Kapu”, which means “Sacred or Forbidden”, for Tongan’s you guys have the same word, except you guys say “Tapu.” Hawaiian’s we have “Kai”, Tongan’s say “Kae,” not sure what it means in Tongan. Hawaiian’s we have a word where we say “Kala,” which means “Sun”, Tongan’s i noticed you guys have a word where you say “Kakala”, but i’m not sure what it means in your Language, and in Arabic i noticed that they have the word “Allah.” Hawaiian’s we say “Ha-vai-i” (our ‘W’s have a ‘V’ sound), Tongan’s say “Hawa-iki”, and Maori’s say “Hawai-ki.” And i know there’s many more too that i might not be able to think of right now.

When you say Tupou Nuaa was a good man, with a good heart, as a Palanghi, i scratch my head because he is a killer of women, who are defenseless. In my culture that's called a mass murderer coward. You don't kill women and children period. Whatever traditions, you are given a conscience, knowing right from wrong. I am really enjoying this series you have done, I'm just stating my opinion. I am not sure if I spelt the Guys name correctly.

@@giicllc8819 Niua. Yes differences in culture. War in small islands meant all potential retaliations were eliminated. Same mentioned in the Godfather movie about Vito Corleone. Which ended up happening as culturally predicted and justified. Politically incorrect perhaps, but some cultures acknowledge the reality of danger to future posterity. Thank you for watching. Stay tuned.

The way the Samoans did weddings with wedding dowry is exactly how ancient Israel did it. The Jews still practice it today. A dowry or bride price isn’t made to buy a slave, it was a sign of the high value the groom placed on his bride. The dowry was also to help cover the void she would leave in the house of her father. The Bible tells of this practice. The sacrifice of Jesus Christ was a dowry to heavenly father on behalf of his bride which was his inheritance (kingdom and subjects). He valued his bride so much, he paid the ultimate bride price. He paid the dowry with his life.

@@marinersjourney3118 look up the Israelite Ketubah. The Ketubah is the marriage certificate (covenant) that is signed by the one officiating, the groom and 2 witnesses. The bride doesn’t sign it, she’s bound to it through her free will to be one with her husband. Nowadays, the bride signs but in ancient times, she didn’t. So after the dowry is paid and the covenant is signed, the couple doesn’t marry just yet but they go on an engagement period that lasts about 2 years. During this engagement period, the groom will go to his father’s land and will build his new home for him and his bride. His father will oversee the building of this home, he has a great reputation to keep so it must be built to perfection. Meanwhile the bride waits faithfully at home. She keeps her lamp by the window, full of oil and the flame lit, awaiting the coming of the groom to take her to their new home. She will prepare her dress and keep it white, she’ll be God loving, obedient, virtuous, submissive, wise etc The best man will serve as a messenger between both parties during their separation. Passing messages of love and confirmation between the two. The father officiates the wedding and is also in charge of all the wedding party details. Sending out invites, filling the banquet hall. Once everything is ready, the Father and only the father can give the approval and say the work is done. At that moment, the groom with his wedding party will make their way to pick up the bride and her party. This call can happen at any time of the day or night. Once the groom picks up the bride and everyone is settled in the banquet hall, the father will call for the doors to be closed. Only those inside will celebrate and feast. This is the wedding of the Israelites. You can see the similarities between the Samoans, Israelites, Jews and the wedding parable Jesus told (Matthew 22:1-14) Hope you like reading 😂

The things about Tapu with the deceased are the same as the Israelites and the law of Moses (Numbers 19:11-22). There were strict practices when handling the deceased. One would become unclean if they came in contact with the body and would have to go through a cleansing period before returning to normal life. Also the forts of bamboo you mentioned with the dug out a ditch roundabout. Very similar to the forts built in the Book of Mormon (Alma 53:3-5)
