Thank you for another very interesting and well made video. I'm enjoying this series very much because these German brands are very little known here in the UK, and their stories are not well understood. I have seen just one Glas 1700 coupé in my whole life!

In 1957 my uncle bought a Lloyd 600 Kombi, mainly for his business as a wine merchant. (It was an 'upgrade' from his Zuendapp DB200 motorcycle with a trailer.) I liked the car - apart from the rear-hinged doors and the front wheel drive. I still hate front wheel drive, but I think that the Lloyd still looks quite good, even today.

Hello, my name is Mario, I'm from Brazil and a big fan of DKW. I've been watching and collecting everything I can about the brand for several years. I just watched the video, it was the best material I've come across in all this time. The amount and detail of information, the historical development, the connections between the facts give a formidable view of the history of this brand for which I have great affection (my father had a DKW-Vemag Pracinha, a popular version of the Universal station wagon). Today I have an Audi A4 Avant that maintains the brand's tradition. Congratulations for the quality of the video, you're doing an excellent job. Greetings from Brazil Mario

Thank you for the kind words. This video is far from perfect. I failed to mention that the frame and bodywork of the pre-war DKWs was made from wood, which was prone to rot. The bodys were sagging, making the doors hard to close, or were even snapping apart in the middle. I also had forgotten to read the text about the Munga, which I was trying to compensate showing text on the pictures. But I am happy that you enjoyed the video.

Doubt if many folks running around in an Audi know the origins of those four rings. NS U is an interesting story, the fabulous but flawed RO 80, then the last model that became a Volkswagen, K70???

The F89 is beautiful, resembling the original SAAB. Like Auto Union, car guys here in Texas should know them even if they were never officially reported. The German ingenuity and work ethic would not be suppressed, even after Hitler. So many fascinating postwar cars! I owned a BMW Isetta in the late sixties and would've loved to have a Messerschmidt.

Very interesting. I don’t think DKW was ever officially imported here to North America, however, as a kid, I did se an actual 1000 SP. People thought it was a homemade scaled down T.Bird. Well , it was a real car. And , yeah, I’d own one, if I could. Excellent job on the video. 🚗🙂

Actually, DKW cars were imported into the USA, but only for a short period during the mid-1950s. The two-stroke engines, the lack of pre-mixed oil/gas fuel at gas stations, the rough idle, the meagre performance and poor reliability, and the harsh competition to which even well-established US brands fell victim were the main causes that the brand never gained significant traction and is now largely forgotten in the USA.

Volkswagen had managed to pull itself out of trouble when they were nearly bankrupt after having stuck too long with the air-cooled rear-engined rear-wheel-drive cars, albeit with the help of another struggling carmaker with up-to-date products - Audi. Maybe they will soon find an advanced but struggling Chinese carmaker that they can exploit to update their own model range like they did with Audi.

Such an interesting article Sir. Im a, ex pat when Younger english born Australian citizen never heard of the brand Loyd in Germany . MY English father who grew up and was nearly 18 when WW2 Finished , never mentioned the Loyd brand only how so reliable and good old Volkswagen beetle was the first 3 years he had, when we emigrated to Australia from UK In 1969. Lots of us who are into vehicles only know about the usual Volkswagen, Mercedes, BMW & opel & ford's Germany and of course the DDR Trabi's & Wartburg Marques so I found it so interesting and well presented about the Loyd Marque and possibly other German Marques that may no longer be manufactured.

Difficult to understand - they were exported everywhere, to Australia as well, just like Goliath and Borgward. They could be seen at each corner of the street in Germany - and outwitted a beetle all day long....

Was it West or East German?
@maerchenonkel71
@maerchenonkel71 2 ай бұрын
Lloyd was a brand of the Borgward group of Bremen, West Germany. However, the models 300 and 400 are very similar to the East German Trabant, which is no coincidence. Before World War II, engineers at DKW in Saxony, which was to become part of East Germany after the war, worked on a small, affordable car with front wheel drive and a transversially-mounted two-cylinder two-stroke engine. The project was delayed due to the war. A group of engineers fled East Germany, settled near Bremen, and founded the engineering company INKA. They were tasked by Borgward with constructing a small, affordable, simple car, so they developed the pre-war DKW plans to a market-ready model. Later, they became employees of the Lloyd branch of the Borgward group. Over in East Germany, the remaining engineers went back to the same plans when they were tasked to construct a small, affordable, simple car by the government and developed the Trabant.

Tiny mistake: the downgrouded Arabella has 34 bhp not only 25! So there where 34/38 and the deluxe 45 bhp engines available. Only for really hardcore knowledge. The Lloyp LP 250 with full equipment is named Lloyd LP 250 V. Most of these 3858 Models were "V" equiped, only a handful barebone ones were made. And the 600 models had first different rearlights and indicators, in 1957 were also a version LP 600 with the look a like or the body of the LP 400, the minor upgraded LP 600 is now named Alexander and in 1958 came the luxury version included callers as an Alexander TS. But all of 3 them were staying on the list until their bitter end in August of 1961. They were no replacement. The Arabella was on the market until 1963. The last 1493 were assambled by the manufacturer Schätzle

Very interesting. Borgward is a brand that little is known, especially here in the States. [ I had always “prided “myself in knowing about car brands, even as a kid, ] But I had no idea they actually Imported them here, nor did I know about the bankruptcy, [ only that they went into bankruptcy]. And never knew they were produced in Central/South America. The Isabella , especially the coupe , I always thought an absolutely GORGEOUS car. [ I also enjoyed the other two videos , Lloyd, and Goliath]. Informative, and enjoyable. Also well spoken (( and NO horrible AI voice❗️)) I have subscribed. 🚗🙂

Didnt Borgward work on one of the Leopard I Prototypes?
@wbrenne
@wbrenne 2 ай бұрын
There were three consortia that developed different designs. Consortium A consisted of Porsche, Atlas-MaK, Luther Works and Jung-Jungenthal, Consortium B consisted of Ruhrstahl, Rheinstahl-Hanomag and Rheinstahl-Henschel, and consortium C consisted of Borgward. However, Borgward never built a prototype, lagging behind the other consortia in terms of progress. The ministry of defense found the Borgward design to be too risky, so further development was stopped after the bankruptcy of the Borgward group. Four prototypers were built based on the designs of consortia A and B and tested in Germany and France. Based on these, consortia A and B developed a joint prototype II, but consortium B dropped out after making two prototypes II due to technical and financial issues. Only consortium A led by Porsche remained.
